Could you live with your system and be happy if no upgrades were possible?

Yes, provided I could continue to tweak it; I presume "upgrades" would mean complete replacement of elements of the system like the amp, speaker, cables, etc. If changing of components or circuitry within components were not allowed, then, no, I wouldn't get on the train ...

Yes. If no upgrades were possible I could be very happy with what I currently own/use.

But I won't since they are possible. I use two different pre-amps. One for two channel (TacT 2.2XP) and one for HT (Integra 80.2). Once either the DiracLive SSP or the new Lexicon SSP is released and proven, one of those would replace my two existing preamps. Then I'm (almost) done..........Except for a new projector once the new JVC is released

Is there a 12 step program for this disease :confused::confused:

Nothing ...you can't spend a dime...other than maintenance.

I could as well and my system is nowhere near yours and most others here in terms of performance.

Yes, I am now just a maintenance butler for my system with minor changes (tube swaps that I already have). I am happy with it, nothing I have heard so far makes me unhappy with it.

Then definitely no: current setup is hanging together with a prayer and a whisper, if I breathe on it too hard something will fall off, and it could still go quite some distance if I put my mind to it. I would much prefer to throw the whole lot in the bin, and listen to the TV and bedside radio ... :)

I could honestly live with a lot less. I'm not complaining though. :)

Yes :)

I coudn't however live without new tapes and LPs :)

I could try, but I don't think so. As good as my system is, I've been cursed by exposure to much better stuff, and I miss those upgraded components!

My wallet, however, has other ideas: it insists that I be quite content for the foreseeable future!

I could, I do, I will.

John,

No, I would not be happy with your strict terms if I had to apply it to my system as it is now.

If no future upgrades would be possible, I would downgrade to a more simple system and find another hobby. I love music and find great pleasure listening to music, and would surely go on listening to great music, but an evolving system is also part of my audio life.

Perhaps if I owned the Alexandria series 2 I could stop for a reasonable time ...

Personally, I think it is important in life to appreciate what you have AND also strive for more (because that's my defintion of what i wish to do in life...keep striving. otherwise, i am wasting my energy being idle). Audio is the same...i am truly grateful for the audio system i already have...and i am also happy to seek selective upgrades when they come along in the quest for superior sound. If i stopped, i would continue to enjoy what i am enjoying even as we speak...which is great music (1,000+ cds) playing thru a system which i have enjoyed the labor of building, second-hand piece by second-hand piece, over the years. At the same time, i have had my eye on a second-hand SOTA transport for some time now...;)

as it pertains to performance; yes, i could happily live with what i now enjoy. in fact; i plan on that. of course, i've made a large effort in the last 2 years (15 years?) to get to where i wanted to be, and i'm there.

OTOH i'd have a hard time regarding not being involved in the audiophile cultural effect....in other words...it's fun to interact with fellow audiophiles on new ideas and products in efforts to move the performance needle. i'd miss not being involved with that.

does that make sense?

As regards the striving for more, and moving the performance needle, there are 2 simple goals:

* Have every recording you have to be musically satisfying
* Be able to play any of them at any volume level, from a headphone whisper to Basspig's levels, and still get the same emotional kick

Pretty straightforward, really ...

What does musically satisfying mean? You can listen to a song on a car radio or a boom box and dance to it. Is that musically satisfying?

So why buy any high-end audio equipment?

I think it can be, yes! Obviously not to the same degree as a decent in-home setup, but satisfying nonetheless. Listening critically to music is a lot of fun and gives me great pleasure, but in the end it'll always be about the actual music and not necessarily how it's reproduced through a system. I guess for me...music comes first and then the sound. Does that make me an oddity in the world of high fidelity sound reproduction? It probably does, but I'm sticking to it!;):)

Agree with you, John. I will search out audiophile remasterings of jazz or classical albums where i really like the artist and music...and wish to enhance that with an even better remastering...but i never look for audiophile albums with either artists or music i do not like. in spite of how well recorded some of them really are...i just cannot stand the music and its just not for me.

Agreed 100%. I made that mistake early on and never again.

Most of the time when I post here I'm on my desktop PC and listen through some fairly crappy speakers playing in the background, and I could care less about the quality of the music I'm listening to. A song will pop into my head and I press play to listen...Heck, a lot of times (discounting the non-audiophile quality of it) my head will bob sideways, my feet will stomp and my fingers are snapping because I'm enjoying the music. And that to me is what it's all about.
