Visit to Audiophile Bill to hear his horns project

Your audio budget will go up once Marc mans up and has a serious talk with Ra about new speakers ! :p

I really like Supravox drivers too. I have been using the 285 Supravox drivers in my mid bass horn. Lovely tonally.
Is this for another system? I'm a bit confused as I thought this project was a "simple" 2 way... Aer + slob.

Yes this is another system. I have been trying to come up with my all out madness system. Spent last 7 months modelling, building and listening to dedicated horn loaded mid bass solution.

Starts to get a lot tougher as you add more “ways” to the design. I have restricted myself to a two-way or I would never finish...even now I have three drivers and two horns I have “settled” on.

To be honest the mid bass horn is integrating really well right now. Simulated amazingly too tbh. The Supravox driver behaved like a dream. Hoping to get away with 3 way if all goes to plan.

Altec used to do a field coil. Those are no more available and if one is lucky to find one it can cost well upwards of 20k

This guy added a field coil to his and made it himself. Have only seen his videos

I started a new field coil thread now, Ked.

Would the speaker be active or passive?

More than likely passive for the mid bass + upper horn and active in sub bass.

Best.

Says the filthy rich.
Then there’s us generally more paw pussies… I must admit though I don’t mind some kind of a budget (and in the great audiophile tradition stretched completely as far as poss) as limits can help make a few decisions for us.

The designer part of me likes some bearable constraints otherwise I’d wander aimlessly in the stratosphere in constant improvement mode. There’s something less rewarding about having no limits and then perhaps even no possible end because something always can be amended without any real consideration.

You will wander into stratosphere in this hobby anyway, designer or not. Diy horn speaker designers replace cartridges and valves by speaker drivers and caps, inductors, resistors etc

Sucked in to the stratosphere more likely… :)

I reckon 16 of these per channel in an ultra rigid OB design would be interesting.

I'd go to the Alpha Centauri Hi-Fi Show 2437 to hear that when light speed has been far exceeded without time travel consequences.

Vintage drivers by then, so gotta be good.

If they turned out to be shite I would demand a ticket refund, however.

£500,000 of drivers without your baffle o_O

Yep, the sound of banknotes scattering away with the wind.
