WAVAC 833 v1.3 - Anyone heard this?

Thanks Frantz.

Re: X1 upgrade to X2...the cost of the upgrade would still put me at less than 30 cents on the dollar of an X2 new...hard to justify the cost differential. Besides, thats for another day

As for power, i have been thru this with Gryphon ad nauseum...a friendly distributor who used to handle Gryphon has taken over to help...their work is under warranty and they have taken it back to try to find and fix the problem. fingers crossed.

as for power, i use a Transparent Reference power conditioner on the front end...straight into the wall for power amp. i will look into ups and arthur kelm.

Slightly OT and the subject for another thread .. Straight into wall socket although loved by audiophile is light-years removed from real power conditioning ... You simply are feeding your amp something that goes straight into its own breaker .. it still shares power with the rest of the house and likely a good number of PCs and other digital things or switching power supplies ...I don't know the Transparent Power conditioner ... My money would still be on Dual Conversion UPS and/or serious attempt at cleaning the AC line like Equi=Tech.. I prefer Dual conversion UPS.
For the record for most equipment the improvement are very discernible, even with knowledge removed i-e blind ... And I hope your Gryphon amp problems are corrected ...

i agree with you...i used my Gryphon with Nordost Thor and it was better quality sound...until it blew the Thor. with 100 amps peak current, i am afraid without more technical knowledge of sticking the amp into a power conditioner now. i wish i could...if you have any technical knowledge about a power conditioner that would take this kind of current, please let me know!!!!! thanks.

In fact, lately I often whether we're lead to the wrong conclusions using LPs (forget digital) in contrast to 15 ips tapes. There's just so much information, be it tonal, spatial, dynamic or frequency wise on the tapes and one doesn't need equipment to exaggerate an area to make the component or system sound good (eg say an emphasis in the upper mids as was done years ago to give the impression of greater resolution).

Alright, it's an internet translation ;)

Hi All,

I am considering a change up in amplification. I am very curious about this one, which has a few units floating around in the second-hand market. I run Wilson X-1/Grand Slamms and am looking for: superb power (down thru low bass), tonal purity and extension. Front end is Zanden digital and CJ ref preamp.

Anyone heard Wavac 833 v1.3 who can comment/compare with other amps (Gryphon, Lamm, Krell Evo Ones, FM Acoustics, etc)? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Lloyd
Wavac 833 is base on Shisido's design positive bias SE amp, beside 833m is the highest power out put amp Wavac also have 805 838 in similar design but less power, I don't have experience in 833 but I do have the rest similar transmitting tube in SE ( 805 838 810 826 809 ), although different tube will have their own character but compare to those common negative bias tube (300B 2A3 EL34 KT88 ) are completely in two different kind of sound , maybe it will depend on personal favor but in my case , I will not go back to the negative bias amp again
cheers

Thanks Tony...very helpful insights into different tubes.

Only guessing but would think that the WAVACS should work though don't know how they'll sound in the bottom end. Not many speakers go down there :) I'd imagine the midrange would sound glorious, maybe a little soft on top?

Hi Myles, have read up the reviews and technical tests...sounds like they roll off in treble if used with low impedance speakers. Since X1s are 7ohms across 120hz-10khz, i think they are supposedly to be quite linear thru the upper spectrum. Low bass is a question...i agree. that said, there are always sacrifices...and i have to imagine that if the treble/mids are glorious, and the bass has lots of slam...but perhaps not as tight as a Gryphon...that is still a pretty good overall sound...and more satisfying to a bass freak than an SET that cannot drive bass hard.

Do you know anyone i can speak to for further insights/advice? Thanks!

Ok Jack201 - has the Wavac finally arrived yet? Let us know!! ;) Very, very interested to hear your opinions.
