Great recording, with lots of ambiance and a good sense of the hall. I have never paid attention to this Prokofiev piano concerto, but I really enjoyed this one, and it's now one of my favourites! The Ravel was quite fun too, in a more playful way.
Very interesting. I have almost all of Bolet's Decca recordings. According to wiki, he was signed by Decca in 1978 (my data shows he did his first recording in 1977 which was released in 1978) at the age of 64. He did many recordings with them until his death in 1990. My friend John Dunkerley was the recording engineer for most of his Decca recordings. His first recording (on Decca's L'Oiseau Lyre label) featured some of the most technically difficult pieces in the piano literature, composed by his teacher Leopold Godowsky. They are arrangements and variations of the already very difficult Chopin Etudes, made even more difficult by Godowsky.
Is your mastertape from a recording done of the concert and released as a commercial recording, or a private tape? What was the program and how did you acquire the tape? I assume it is 15ips 2 track.
I bought the studer B62 plus all the tapes from a relative of the person who did the recordings , afaik he passed away.
5 tapes came with it ,all recorded basf tapes plus a whole box 10-12 0f unrecorded ampex tapes .
The recordings all piano were : one of J bolet chopin 29,25 min and reger (reyer?) 27.54 min .
Some handwriting is in the cartons you can clearly hear the audience so its a live recording whether private or not i dont know.
I have also 2 of radu lupu and 2 of CL helffer.
Date of the J bolet recording was 29 /or 24 feb. 76 15 ips. 2 track
I also have the actual brochure of alll the 75 and 76 concerts this came also with it .
On this brochure it says jorge bolet 29 feb 1976 rachmaninoff and liszt .
Arguably what was played was chopin etc .
I can play the recording on my telefunken or the B62 and make a recording and put it on you tube so you can hear it
I actuallly have posted about the studer and the tapes already incl pics .
Its in the HJ system member section .somewhere on this site.
You re right its incredibly dynamic piano its likely chopin as stated by the remarks on the carton
Thanks, that sounds impressive. I'll try to find your post. Bolet was born in Cuba and was a comparative unknown until the age of 60+. Apparently the tapes you have are part of a series of concerts that he did which got him noticed on the world stage and drew Decca's attention to him. He did only a few recordings before the digital era. Most of my records of him come from the '80's are were recorded in digital using Decca's proprietary digital system (48k-16 bit). I do have the three early analogue recordings he did from 1977-1980. One of Decca's goals was to have a series of Liszt recordings by Bolet, and they succeeded in have 8 records of Lizst in the series. However, later recordings were never made due to his failing health.
I'll PM you.
