Just finished listening to a Bach Christmas Special, three Christmas cantatas and the Magnificat in D. Absolutely first rate singing.

Listening to a lovely Pentatone DSD remastering of Vivaldi, perfect for the holiday season. Takes me back a few decades when I was lucky enough to hear Vivaldi in a lovely old church in Venice not far from where he taught.

A couple of fine song cycles by Schulhoff. These are more Mahlerian than what I think of as Schulhoff’s modern, jazz influenced style, and the orchestration and melodies are just lovely. Downloaded from Qobuz, but unfortunately it didn’t include a pdf or booklet so I was forced to got to lieder.net to find a translation. Alas, only the German is available, unless you don’t mind the awkward results of one of the translation engines. The music is so fine, however, you really don’t need the words.

Mikhail. He looks so sad and disgruntled and has such a pair of furrowed brows. Hardly the poster child for a label named OBSESSION. Honestly, now, I cannot see Calvin Klein signing up to sell their similarly named scent either. It is even harder to imagine throngs eagerly anticipating his Balailaika crying out. I saw him perform the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra earlier this year. He was brilliant. I am seeing him perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in 2024.

His Mendelssohn, if he remains true to form, is rather contemplative evidenced by his less-than-attacking style, where some can hammer their way through the concerto and make it work, Hadelich's approach can be seen/heard as being more nuanced.

Yea, better to stay inside listening to beautiful music. That is what I’ve done all day too, even though only -4 -5°C here… but still snowy and cold… Enjoy your music Scott !

When the Three Pieces for Orchestra was released as a "single" download several years ago, it was spectacular!

The 2013 live performance in Salzburg! The first movement starts out slower than usual, but buckle in, it's quite a ride. Baden-Baden doesn't even sound like the same orchestra as in the famous cycle on Hänssler, and it's live!
