Why are artists not boycotting streaming?

And what's the alternative? For selling platforms you have alternatives like Bandcamp and CD Baby. How many people still listen to AM/FM? Since my first cassette Walkman in the 80's I did mix tapes/ playlists rather than listen to the same programed music played over and over again.

WRT concerts I have seen several venues go from independent to Live Nation/ Ticketmaster group. In all cases the new management ruined the experience by turning them into cash cows with the emphasis money. They made the best views, tables and balcony into VIP only or preferred seating and doubled the ticket costs.

You used to be able to have free rein and roam through out the entire facility at will with the same ticket price. Not any more. You got in at doors and you could sit anywhere as it was a GA show.

If I was an artist, I'd release a limited number of tracks on YouTube/Tiktok etc to get my music out there and release album downloads on Bandcamp. If this strategy was adopted by most artists and led to streaming platforms going bust, so be it.

Many already are using that exact model and have been for years now. I don't think it has made any real difference. At least with Bandcamp and Bandcamp Fridays you know where the moneys going.

Many? The vast majority of acts are on streaming.

Yes they actively stream use, Youtube and are on Bandcamp as well as Amazon and links from Bandcamp to their label if they have one and are not independent and of course live shows if on tour. Have you used Bandcamp?

This band released a live album on streaming services last year:rolleyes:

Yeah I purchased it from a Bandcamp downloaded in Hi Res and MP3 320 among the other formats available. These bands are not stupid and use any available distribution avenue. So you hear it on Spotify and purchase through Bandcamp, Amazon, Apple, their own site and so on. Did you look at Automatic? It's on pre release. 1 tracks now many also link video's as well.

Steaming isn't going anywhere it is to popular and profitable. You complain about it being unfair to the artists yet you stream?

I don't stream I purchase all of my media. Maybe you should too, if less people streamed it would have a bigger impact than an artist boycott.

It is stupid to release your music on streaming services and get paid FA.

Probably at the direction of their management or record label.

Yeah well steaming gives the most exposure so no not dumb. You seem to be ignoring all the other paid outlets they are running at the same time. If it was exclusive to streaming I would agree but it's not and is frankly expected. It's the new "norm"

i find this thread to be a bit of a troll. Rexp is a confessed streamer and yet he is denigrating streaming services and questioning the business acumen of bands using these platforms. It is almost as humorous as wealthy white people complaining about white privilege.:oops:

Some of my friends do boycott streaming. Band Camp is popular among these.

Some are desperate for exposure and are happily adding content to any streaming service that will have them.

Some are making so much money, they don’t worry about it.

Some are selling vinyl as merch, hoping to unload 250 copies of their latest release before they’re stale.

The music performance industry is a fickle master. Less than 1% of those who enter emerge with financial gain. None emerge unscarred.

Yes especially on Bandcamp part of the vinyl revival. When the first 250 run out they will run a second in another color.
