FWIW, the system this is based on was more impressive visually than it was sonically.666-082421: a meeelyon dollars

I suppose it's inevitable, and doing a quick internet search shows a few speakers north of a million dollars already. Based on my ancient memory, Mark Levinson opened this can of worms back in the late 70's, with the release of their preamplifier at pushing $1,800. Shocking. Audio components have definitely risen faster than inflation, so be sure to elbow yourself to the front of the line when the $1M turntable is releasedI wait for the first one million dollar component.
I guess it will be a pair of speakers and that will be next year.
Followed by a pair of monos the year after that
And a turntable another year later
I find your, probably purposeful, "FWIW" comment brilliant. Although this system was mainly a home theater application, I cannot imagine why it wouldn't sound pretty good, considering it was composed of McIntosh, Snell, etc. Just sayin' Also, although visually impressive, I also can't imagine a vacuum in there to keep things tidy. Bottom line, totally impractical.FWIW, the system this is based on was more impressive visually than it was sonically.
I will give you just two reasons, of the top of my head, as to why.I find your, probably purposeful, "FWIW" comment brilliant. Although this system was mainly a home theater application, I cannot imagine why it wouldn't sound pretty good, considering it was composed of McIntosh, Snell, etc.
B&Ws are long gone.I actually thought that was Kal with his 5 B&Ws
I will give you just two reasons, of the top of my head, as to why.
1. If the sofa/listener were to scale, they would be smaller and behind a huge glass table as wide as the sofa. It effectively reflected all the video images as well as all the sound and image from the front speakers.
2. Regardless of the input format, all the music was played over the multiple front channels (5 or 7, I cannot recall) with the additional amp/speaker feeds interpolated by analog mixing of the adjacent ones.
Both result in smearing of the (audio) imaging.
B&Ws are long gone.
