Bonzo, will you eventually get a pair of speakers like these or will you build your own?

i already have the woofers and should be getting the drivers above soon. After that the woofer cabinet any decent carpenter can build to standard Altec spec for not much. The horn I will get Markus klug’s. Misho will make my crossover. This is all as guided by him.

the big challenge actually is the space that I have to sort out some time but I have time. I can always rotate top driver with tad or radian beryllium. Essentially, the same strategy I had mentioned pre pandemic but after this trip just took firmer hold.

What about your TAD 4003 ??

In an ideal world I will build the Altec 817 by borrowing the design, and rotate out the Altec upper driver for the TAD 4003 learning how to adjust crossover myself. The 817 midbass and bass solution is just so much easier to fit into a 2-way and a living room, and Altec woofers have better texture than JBL. In a practical world the 4003 sale will finance this whole speaker! The 4003 is a more transparent and higher end extended driver, but the above speaker was just so good I can settle with that

Wow, that is BIG news, Ked.
Congrats

How much will the TAD 4003 cost approximately?:oops:

Maybe you can even overtake Ron who is already close to the finishing line :p

They have recently been listed at 9000 and 11000 euro on Finn and Hifisentralen respectively. Mine are unused with consecutive serial numbers bought from the same person who sold to Leif and his friends. I will sell them somewhere between that, the price keeps going up.

The problem is still the space for an 817. I am in no rush it will still take 3 - 4 years. Also I am waiting to listen to Misho’s A5 whenever he completes it to know if it is a valid back up for a smaller size room (it requires same drivers just one pair of woofer instead of two)

Wow, first they were around 2.5k then a few years later the tad released a batch for around 3.5k. I though it was high now hearing 10k, it is becoming silly.

Even the 4001 which are in current production are more than that, and 2002 are 3 - 4k. Try getting 4003 in good condition.

in terms of sonic closure, yes. Sitting at home and listening is another lifestyle, I am not built for it yet.

Plus, I have to wait for my kitten to mature and become less interested in stuff.

Keep us updated. I've been away from this audio madness for two years. I sold everything in my system besides my Misho Myronov preamp. I'll be looking to rebuild a new system slowly over the next few years. I'll be avidly following your progress, and I'll be giving Misho a call soon.

I like the clear evolution in the quality of sound reproduction emanating from this pair of A7’s pre and post a few modifications :

Yes there is an evolution but IMO he. can get better he has all the ingredients. The Ypsilon is a nice phono, and while Ayon might be a good set for some requirements Altec needs something much simpler.
