My new Degritter Mk2....

Going to be trying a 2A3 that is available either as a kit or pre-built (I did pre-built as I don't have the time nor space to try and build an amp).

It's the Analog Ethos 2A3 Legidarium.

I received some NIB 1943 RCA 814 and 1950's (no boxes) 814's today for the Aries-Cerat mono-blocks.

Just received and cleaned up: 1933 RCA (Silvertone) UX-245 tubs.

I'm very excited about the addition of these two items.

I've been on the search for one that met my criteria - and priced fairly - for quite some time. And then I found someone who had TWO of them!

Anyone whose into vintage tubes should know exactly what these are....

I woke up this morning planning to order a Fozgometer, I'll take this as a sign ;) ...........

Out of curiosity, what type of information does all that this testing provide? Could you not detect a defective tube just by listening?
Hi - great question.

I personally use the testers for a couple of things (I think different people use them for different info).

I'm going to first test the tube BEFORE I put it in my gear to make sure it doesn't have a any shorts or a gas issue so I don't damage my gear.

Then I'm going to test its relative strength compared to a rough (I say rough as it's never exact since it's based on variables) "when new" rating since I buy vintage tubes and pay based on how strong they are.

For instance in just the last two weeks I had one vintage tube I bought that failed these tests on the tester, and I had a pair of type 45 tubes that were supposed to be close to new specs but tested 1/5 what they should have been. It was clear they must have suffered shipping damage. In both instances I was able to send the tubes back.

I also had an issue with one of the tube amps where it kept blowing fuses. Rather than replacing all 6 tubes, I simply stuck them in the tester and was able to ID in about 2 minutes it was a rectifier that had gone bad.

Anyone seriously owning decent tube gear should test their tubes!! Especially more exklusive ones like NOS, but even new ones are not always somone may claim. You also dont wanna harm anything, depending how the tube device circuits are protected within your gear! If you are a ^tube-roller, testing is key to sucess & protection!

I'm very scaptical about those vintage tube tester, because if you wanna test tubes seriously, like matching tubes you need measurements! Also you must be an radio-veteran to use them correctly. So I highly recommend something like Roetest V11, I'm just an average tester, not a nerd. I dont wanna miss it anymore, especially for my more expensive collection like 211, 845, 805a, 300b or PX4 tubes!

Sounds like you have great tubes!

I would suggest though with something like the Jackson 648P (stupid simple to use and gives you useful info) or even my military TV-7's, they don't require a radio veteran to use them properly nor derive extremely useful info.

I'm amazed at how accurate my Jackson is with its simple "good or bad" scale when compared to the TV-7.
