Hurricane Preparation

---Here are some facts, just for knowledge sake.
1. Right now, we just had an aftershock here on Vancouver Island. ...1:59 PM Pacific time.
2. Yesterday, on the Queen Charlotte Islands (British Columbia, Canada) at around 8:00 PM there was an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude.
3. Since then we had more than a hundred aftershocks, and more than a dozen of them higher than 4.0 magnitude.
4. ...One of them a 6.3 magnitude, on the Richter scale.
5. Right after that 7.7 earthquake, the USA announced a tsunami alert.
6. Canada had theirs (tsunami alert) an hour after the USA's one!!!
7. Not long ago, we all remember the big tsunami in Japan. ...Truly devastating and killing.
- And Hawaii just had a tsunami alert in the last 48 hours, but turned out to be ok.
- Some parts of Europe are under heavy snow blankets (right now).
8. Right now, in the North-East coast of the USA (and Canada), there are three major developing weather systems, all colliding together, and providing power to that super storm (Hurricase Sandy).
9. One is pushin' hard from the South East (Atlantic), the other is comin' from the West (with heavy winds and lower temperatures), and the third is comin' from the North with cold air.
10. All of this makes for a super storm. ...With heavy rain, snow, cold, heavy winds, big waves, and flooding.
11. Today's full moon.
12. Halloween is Wednesday.
13. November is just around the corner.
14. December 2012 is very very near by (32 more days and we're in it).

As long as most of you are taking it with a grin. it is good to keep a good spirit .. Sandy however is serious and I would advise those in the North East to refrain from turning their system on..Turn everything off and unplugged. Hurricanes are no jokes and this one is a monster. With such winds it is not uncommon for High Voltage lines to fall over low voltage ones and overwhelm protection, Very high voltage spikes and brownouts are also the norm during these. The power companies can't afford the luxury of graceful shutdowns of their plants... If there is an emergency thy just cut it and that often provkes massive surges ... Also keep yourself ready with clean water and canned food.. Some of you may be out of electricity for days...

Yeah, sure, but I also own a house in CT that I hope will be intact when I return.
According to network news, nat'l weather service now calling this 'superstorm,' because it is no longer just a hurricane but a combo with the western and northern fronts. It is also moving faster than hurricane speed, and apparently, will hit lower manhattan at the same time as high tide. that could be ugly.

Stay safe guys. The reports and photos coming in from friends in that area aren't looking too good. I can only imagine that many folks will dread walking out of their house in the morning and seeing all of the damage.

the lower east side one is particularly disturbing; you expect to see high water in the coastal areas, but in town?
One thing I know about NY'ers though, they may think they are the toughest city in the world, but what they are really, really good at- bitching!
Not until late Tuesday. There's another high tide tomorrow morning that will continue to flood areas. Pretty windy gusts up to 60-70 mph but now winds settling down to 30-40 mph.
They are now predicting thunderstorms at around 10pm up here. I'm waiting for the plague of locusts. John, I think the center of the storm is predicted to reach lower Manhattan at roughly the same tide as high tide, pretty soon. Given the lunar cycle (do you guys use the same moon up in Canada?), the water levels may be historically high.
Myles is down in the city.
I'm 25 miles north, on the Hudson River.
