Sorry, I still have to learn how to use the focus button of my camera ... And I should not forget that some years ago I put a few good quality pictures on WBF and they have shown in scam advertisements some time later!

You upgraded your setup " a little bit" since I bought your Mint protactor.
In these lazy days I am thinking about going back to airsuspension for my TW. Your DIY looks very interesting for me.

How does your MC 7500 compare to the MC Anna ? There is someone locally selling a MC 7500.
I always liked the MC 7500 and still consider it to be a phantastic cartridge. The MC Anna is a bit more on the lush side compared to the MC 7500 and gives bit more resolution. Tonally think Benz Gullwing SLR vs. Benz LP-S for example.

In the end it is again a question of tonearm synergy. The MC 7500 is a brilliant performer in my TW 10.5 tonearm while it performed a bit dull and boring in the SME 312s.

Hi Andreas, I almost forgot about the Mint Protractor. That was for the Origin Live Conqueror, wasn't it? Gosh, that was some time ago...

In regard to the air suspension you might want to check analog-forum.de - there has been quite a bit of discussion about this topic in past years and a lot of valuable information can be found there.


Edit: I just seem to remember: aren't you "Hedlund" on the analog-forum? If so you certainly know all the discussions about the air suspension (and about dampened springs and Sylomer as alternatives...) ;)

I am also very impressed with the look of Jackelsson's air suspension platform. Very clean looking.

Have you compared the SME 312S to the TW Acustic arm using the same cartridge? How do they sound different?

Great photo, BTW. I notice a Pass XP25 phono stage.
Hi Peter, the SME has quite a bit of inner damping, i.e. it can handle energy going from the cartridge into the tonearm very well. This means that it can tame cartridges that are a bit critical in this respect amazingly well. Think Lyra Skala or vdH Colibri for example. On the other hand I found that the SME can sometimes be a bit boring with cartridges that are on the lusher side of things anyway. Think MC Anna for example. Anyway, both are phantastic tonearms when combined with a matching cartridge.

Thank you for the description, LPS with 3012R is my current favorite combination.

Hi Jarek, unfortunately the wooden floor in our house (built 1901) sets clear limits to the load you can put onto it. This is already severely limiting the weight I can put onto the air suspension under the record player. So I don’t even want to think about getting in additional air suspensions for the phono amps, simply because of the loading that these would require.

The four air springs I’m using would ideally want to see a total load of >120 kg (270 lbs.) to reach an ideal low resonance frequency of <5Hz. But with the weight of the rather heavy rack plus the other gear I have in there I can unfortunately only do ca. 80kg. And this is already giving a total load of over 180kg (400 lbs.) to the wooden floor on far less than a square meter of surface. No chance really to make the weight on the air springs heavier. And definitely no chance to bring in additional air suspension for other gear.

But currently I have precisely calculated Sylomer pads under the phono and line stages which are working very well in decoupling the Pass gear. In the future the plan is to also try steel springs with a dampening core of Sylomer, they are supposed to work extremely well with lower weight gear. Let’s see...

By the way: my Geithain speakers are active, so no power amps to suspend. :)

I understand well about old wooden floors and load. My house, built in 1790, has wide pine boards. My gear rack is about 700 lbs and each amp/speaker combination is about 600lbs, so I have steel columns under each speaker/amp and two under the turntable/rack sitting directly on the rock basement floor.

Some could learn from the beauty of your suspension design, it looks better than
anything else i have seen. Bravo !
