Almost no one wears a mask around my neighborhood outside. It doesn't appear to bother anyone. Everyone gives ample distance between themselves and someone else. (it might even be my imagination that I did see one lady with one)
That’s a bit worrying Given how contagious it is.

But isn't the CDC advising people to wear masks now?

It's a bit vague. The recommendation that it's useful to wear masks in public settings is new. People are following the social distancing rule because the language has designated that's what everyone should do. All the TV commercials say social distancing, and it's been said for a month now.

Masks are completely voluntary. Well, all of it is voluntary actually.

Ok that makes more sense although I cringe at "vague" public health recommendations. It just leads to more confusion.

Peter we have managed to implement a cohesive national approach to Covid 19 in Australia - we have a multicultural race - we have states managed by political parties of differing views - we are spread over a greater distance per head of population. The major differences between USA & Aus is the USA is 27% larger than Aus & has a population difference of 23M Aus to 303M USA. It can be done - it is up to the "leaders" to make it happen.

We also have states and cities run by different political parties. I speculate that coordination among states is simpler in AUS because you have a small number of states and state leaders (6?) versus the US (50 + DC).

I agree completely - though the number is 8 the difference between that & 50 in manageability is significant.

It will be interesting to see what plans are implemented for future pandemics in the US - there is little doubt a national approach is more successful & very likely significantly more cost effective.

The USA welcomes diversity only after said diversity has been throughly assimilated.

The motto of the USA is e pluribus unum. It means one out of many. It has been on US coins since 1786, near the founding of the country.

The idea presumes that if you want to come to America, you want to be an American.

Xenophobia is not exclusively American.

True. It is also a sociology word turned political and used by some as an epithet. 'Fear of.'

To me it seems fairly normal that people tend to associate to their own culture and with others who are like themselves. Of course there are exceptions. Efforts to force people to have associations outside what they incline to choose are met with a range of responses from scepticism to resistance. The word 'xenophobia' became a moral judgement word used by those who want to control and cast aspersion upon those prefering to choose their own associations, often with those of their own culture.

I see it as a very fine line between opening the country and kick starting the economy vs staying shut for a while longer as I believe that once the country is opened there will be another spike in cases, so much so that I am betting social distancing and self quarantine will be maintained by many if not most

Yes - a fine line. If vaccines take many many months to establish proof, I don't think the economy and people's pocketbooks can wait that long. This is why I believe prophylactic measures are important as an interim 'time buyer.' I speculate use of some prophylactic measures are already in place within the front-lines of the medical responders. If so, such possibly could be gradually extended out to others in the work force based on immediacy of need, a sort of rolling or scaled return while waiting for a proven vaccine.

President Bolsonaro filmed in busy crowds deliberately wiping his nose, and blowing into his hand, and shaking hands w as many of his adoring public as possible.

You know what they say about meeting people on the way up, and then on the way down.

I don't think this applies to the scientists and physicians who are currently in the forefront, both in the direct fight against COVID19 disease and in modelling the epidemiology and steps to take to limit the impact of this event. If you feel differently, I'd be curious to hear why and about whom.

I think Victor Davis Hanson sums up my feelings about experts quite elegantly here: https://amgreatness.com/2020/04/12/the-thin-facade-of-authority/

Guys, no more beans while in captivity!

DEADLY coronavirus could be spreading through farts, doctors believe.

Well then, stop all counter-measures. If this is true we are ALL going to have the Wuhan in short order. Godspeed y'alls recovery!
