2022 Academy Award Winners

New Hollywood blockbuster movie in the making with W.Smith in the lead role with the title: "Slap me, Spank me"

It's most unlikely that Will Smith will be arrested or indicted. Hell no one gets arrested in LA any more. Apparently the producers talked about having Will removed from the show and should he win the award would be accepted by in his absence by Chris Rock o_O
Now that I would have loved to see especially if Chris slapped the award.

Why do people watch the award shows if they are so bothered by them?

I’m bothered by the war images in the Ukraine, but I still watch the evening news. I watched 15 minutes of the Oscars right before going to bed. It happened to be during the Will Smith assault. I did not stay up for the tears.

Peter, I am not sure how one equates a war to an awards show. One matters and one does not.

Sorry, but those 2 are not equivalent to me.

Gosh David

I remember as a kid growing up that watching the Oscars was a family event full of pomp and tradition. Beautiful gowns and tuxedos. The emcees were an integral part of the show and they had many excellent emcees. We remain a very big movie buff family and sadly the tradition remains, as we hope to see some great nuggets of cinema take home the coveted award.

And then Hollywood "woke" up . Gone are the beautiful gowns and tuxedos and everyone bubbling with enthusiasm. Present now are a totally different academy of actors. God forbid they win as we have to endure their political comments for 5 minutes before they decide to mention the award itself. If they go overtime they get a friendly music reminder. Such did not even happen with Will Smith as he sobbed through his speech talking about love he has and what God has commanded him to do as an actor. He spoke as long as he wanted and was given a huge applause as he left the stage, as if nothing had even happened.

This is not The Academy Awards that I grew up on

I am not denying that it has changed but it changed a long time ago. But you know what you are going to get before you tune it.

Regarding Sunday’s show, and Will Smith aside, who stood up on stage and pontificated about politics? I really thought it was much lighter in that regard. There were short quips here and there but there weren’t any long speeches about it. Frankly, I thought the speeches were very good, including Chastain’s, DeBosse’s and Kotsur’s. I found all of them to be inspiring. Most of them talked about having an opportunity to do what they want to do and were thankful for it. They were all pretty modest.

It might have been milder but nothing changed. Emcees were dumb. Only funny line was from Amy Schumer after the Will Smith incident when she cracked "did I miss something when I was in the bathroom changing out of my Spider Man costume"

For us it was always about the winners because at that time there only 5 nominees in each category. Now it takes an hour just to mention all of the nominees in each category. There are so few movies made now that it almost become a list of every movie made in the past year in that category.

I thought the 2 best acceptance speeches were by Jessica Chastain and Troy Kotsur. They were inspiring. It just seems that every winner had their coming out announcement about their sexuality.

If the Academy had any balls Smith would have been escorted out and someone would have accepted the award for him and the show would have been over rather than forcing the world watch Will Smith make a total mockery of the entire fiasco with a woke statement of love only to leave the stage to a huge round of applause. This is a world gone crazy

They are not equivalent to me either. But I also wouldn’t say an awards show doesn’t matter. Just look at the coverage and this thread. The more relevant question I think is why are people interested in the Oscars. Ratings were actually up 50% over last year. I think the Oscars are loosely a barometer of our culture and the times in which we live. I’m surprised that 15 million people actually tuned in this year.

Peter

FWIW even if the ratings were up 50% (which I seriously doubt), the 2022 Oscars were the 2nd lowest watched in history, second only to last year's awards

It has become a thing of the past

I totally agree Steve. As I say, I watched only 15 minutes of it out of curiosity and then turned it off before it was over and went to bed. It is a reflection of just how woke and out of touch this group of entertainers has become, and I’m relieved that so few people can relate and are interested in watching. It’s a shame, because I enjoy good movies and those who create and star in them should be recognized.

I don't really see how the actors are out of touch. DeBosse discussed that as a gay latino she never thought she would have the opportunity to do what she wanted to do in theater and she is grateful that she can. Kotsur and the rest of the CODA team talked about having a chance to act despite being deaf. Chastain gave praise to Tammy Faye for being bold enough to reach out to people who were shunned by parts of the church and told others who are different that there is a place for them.

These topics, whether you believe in them or support them (no judgement from me), parallel what's going on in our society.

Are there others in Hollywood who may be out of touch? Probably, but that can be said for any industry today.

The hosts/comedians are just up there trying to entertain. I don't believe they represent the core of the Hollywood industry today.

I guess you and I have different expectations. Accept the award graciously and thank those who have helped you win the award… cast, crew, writers directors family etc but whether they are gay, bI or trans is something that to me matters not. What matters is the talent that the individual possesses to win the award l. Accept it graciously and leave the stage rather than meandering about everything else. To watch the warm reception given to Smith after what he did was for me the straw that broke the camel’s back

Steve, I get it, but it matters to these people since in the past they may not have felt they had the same opportunities as straight people and maybe they are giving some hope to others who feel the same way. I don't see how sexuality and hearing or sight impairment are any different in that regard. We will in a society which does not accept everyone for who they are. Those who are different feel the need to speak up about it.

The Smith situation was a fiasco, no doubt.
