Alsyvox planars...prepare to sell your Magico's, YG's, Wilson's, Cessaro's. Maggie's, and all others!!

Panel size matters a lot with planars for dynamics as the range of travel of the drivers is quite limited. I had enormous electrostats that I used as subwoofers (2.4 meters tall and 55cm wide) and smaller panels (still 1.7 meters tall) for 100Hz and up. That had huge dynamics but the panel surface area was probably 2x or more than your 30.7s.
Yes agree and good point.

After reading the last three forum pages, it is apparent that the Alysvox may have suffered from inadequate amp power and/or sagging building power. I thought the tonality was spot on but the dynamics were lacking. I am willing to give them another chance. As to the Bhana's, nothing below 42 Hz makes them inadequate for our sound systems (unless one adds a sub) but great for a second system.
SeagoatLeo, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience at the recent show.

We did through this thread and with KeithR telling us that he asked what power mode was being used in the Alsyvox room at the show. The BX's were being driven with a 50Watt Class A Vitus amp. It could have been put in a 150W A/B mode, but for whatever reason they were running it in the 50 Watt Class A mode.

As you noted it can sound nice with small scale music, but if you push it with something more difficult, with 50 Watts, you will not get a dynamic sound.

As I stated earlier I've played with maybe 20 sets of different Alsyvox speakers and they can play full orchestra, which I believe is the most demanding music to reproduce, in really large space with no issues and actually RIVETING dynamics if on the recording.

To get this type of dynamic sound/experience I personally like 200 Watts into 8 ohms/400 Watts into 4 ohms amplification. You can get by easily, with 100/200, but with 200/400 then you get a GROWl on material that has low bass that is almost uncanny to hear. It's a good growl and grip on <30HZ bass. The BX's move a LOT of air, but to do that you have to amplify them appropriately.

Thx again for sharing your experience at the show!

Sagging power is just a theory. If the amp doesn't switch to AB beyond 50W then I can certainly believe it ran out of headroom on some tracks. That's what I was assuming.

And no, I shouldn't need to go up in the Alsyvox line to find acceptable dynamics. It's either a weak point of the ribbon design or it isn't. There's absolutely no justification for $80k speakers to have design compromises.
You don't have to go up the line. You can go down the line to get very strong dynamics, from the Botticelli X to the Tintoretto even without the external crossovers, depending on room size if you amplify the speakers appropriately. It has a lot to do with the user and room size. I have a Tintoretto X customer driving the Tintoretto X with the Kondo 50 Watt SETs. This customer has a fairly small room (15' X 19') but he plays smooth jazz and simple type music. It's the music that he enjoys and has been listening to for 50 years. For him 50 Watt's is fine. He is happy and loves his system with 50 Watts of SET power.

For someone in a larger room (like me) or that wants to play "whatever" (large scale orchestra, dynamic jazz, electronica) (like me) then you need to give the Alsyvox at least 100 Watts and like I said I personally like 200 watts as my room is 700 sq. ft and I like to completely pressurize the room with HEAVY 20HZ type bass, hard driving recordings.

It's like anything else the application matters.

If anyone in the Souther CA area wants to hear the Tintoretto X driven by 200W/400W in Palm Desert CA, we have a Rhapsody Listening Room with this configuration available now. Just PM me and I will provide you the contact information for Jerry, who is the owner of the Palms Desert RLR to set up a demo. Same goes for BobVin in Portland, who will have BX's and 200/400Watt Amplification, but Bob is still a month or two away, where Jerry is all set to demo now.

Not apologizing for the commercial, it's very pertinent to this thread conversation. And not trying to sell anything either but am providing Alsyvox speakers to hear, driven properly, for those that would like to do so.

What is the power handling of the Alsyvox speakers - I can’t see anything on their website?

I asked Daniele, the developer to be sure. 500 Watts into 4ohms is the recommended number, but there would not be an issue of connecting a 700 Watt or 1000 Watt amplifiers and if the amplifier is not clipping/distorting.

The issue is that if you connect a 1000 Watt amp and give it full volume and close the door to the room, who knows what would happen. Alsyvox has never tried something like this, but who knows what customers will do, so 500 Watts into the 4 ohm load is a safe number.

My guess is amps will give out first.

I destroyed my Accuphase power amps a couple of months ago. They have a thermal cut out when they get too hot which I have triggered many a time. They can supply over 500 Watts into 4 Ohms, but for prolonged periods they just overheat.

I tripped that boundary one too many times. Four power transistors in one monoblock blew. I have had it fixed;)

What speakers do you have?

You should know from my previous posts.

A custom built pair of Apogee Duettas. Foil on film, like Alsyvox.

Only Marc and I read your posts, Justin

I loved my Duestta Signatures. Loved my Divas. Loved my Stages. Heck, I even loved my Slant 6's.
