Audio Note vs. Aries Cerat vs. darTZeel

Excellent! Thanks for sharing all this. That's how it goes sometimes. Sounds like you are in for a treat with the Protos. Will your time with the DarTZeel and the Protos overlap such that you'll be able to play them head-to-head?

hopefully or somewhat close at least, I will need to give space for Protos though and once it's up I'm not going to move it again, ever(!).... 65 kg might be lightweight for some of you, but I'm just getting used to the idea of it. :p

Yeah, I was thinking about that. About 130 lbs, right?

According to Google 65 kg (including PSU) is like 143 lbs, either way probably too heavy to lift on my own.

I have a pair of Kroma Atelier Thais speakers from Spain.
I had help to bring it into my home but I was able to put in on my rack by myself...just ;)

My best information (from several different sources) is that Dartzeel is out of business and has been for several months - although nobody seems to be talking about it and I have been unable to verify that this is indeed so. I would certainly want to clarify the situation before sinking any money into one of their products, new or used.
NOT TRUE. Stop spreading lies.

You've edited his quote. There was a 'to the best of my knowledge' part and a 'I haven't been able to confirm this despite trying' bit before and after the origianl quote.
Hi full post is there in the thread. My quote indicates there is more before and after the part most relevant to what I was saying. I also see that the company has made a fulsome response.

Going back to Audio Note, I am sooo tired of the BS around that company. After stealing the name from Kondo, and 'copying' many of their amp designs, they then attacked the company with legal action. As for their products, I have owned the M3 Preamp, the Conquest Silver 300B Monos, the DAC 5 Special, and before any of that, built some of the copy kits (not great).

Sum up, the products are vastly overrated, unreliable, and IMO sound slow, coloured, midrangy, not accurate, and simply way overpriced for what you get.

On PQ, I don't need to go there, just have a dig around the web, you will see what I mean. Everything about the 'dark side' of high end audio. I am glad there are other really great companies out there to keep me interested in the hobby.

Enough said, but stay away is my opinion.

Tell us how your really feel... ;) What about Kondo? Similar opinion? FWIW, I think a lot of the amplifier designs are quite different between Kondo and AN UK. I am not so sure that they stole designs...name obviously but designs no. One of the best Kondo amps comes even as a push-pull design (GahuOh 300B monos can be either PSET or PP) and Kondo never uses transformer coupling, which AN UK prefers for it's upper models.

Difference? Integrity. Don't forget PQ is not a designer, he is a salesman.

I'm looking at 3 integrated amplifiers which (depending on the case) I will be able to do little to no listening to.

Curious any comparative sonic impressions or characterizations any of you have of any combination of these amps:

- Audio Note UK Meishu Tonmeister (any current variant)
- Aries Cerat (Protos or Genus)
- darTZeel (MkI or MkII)

Thank you!

I have the same information here in France.

I recently reviewed the Audio Note Tonmeister P3 and covered the Integrated. They're fine with 89dB speakers like Audio Note's own AN K/SPe which I own. Sure you can play louder with other amplifiers but it all depends on room size and volume level.

The issue as others have said comes down to your preferences. 300B amps are typically described by every dealer I run into here in Hong Kong as "lady-like" which can be taken to mean beautiful or genteel. The Tonmeister is different than the old Meishu however in that it uses Audio Note's patented Gallahad power supply turning it slightly over to a Meishu with Ongaku drive. Genteel but with a pulse. I have never liked any 300B amps really until the Tonmeister. I was tempted to buy the review sample - I still am. I may look into the Konzertmeister which is the level 4 version of the Tonmeister.

In the end, there is nothing in all of the audio world that I would buy based on reviews or forums. If you simply must buy blind then you have to consider the resale factor - "if I buy X and after a month it's not for me, can I sell it without taking a massive loss?" I'd also consider how long it takes to sell it. Generally, the more well known the easier it is to resell. And it all depends on where you are in the world - Some brands are really easy to sell here in Hong Kong because they are highly sought after but that same brand in the US or Germany may not be.

Unless you are auditioning components in your room with your (other) components, it’s almost useless to audition components when you are the ultra high end of the market. An AC cable or vibration isolation platform can change the sound significantly.

As far as resale - it’s important if you plan to trade in for sure; but as we just saw with DarTZeel, any company can go under.

A client has recently upgraded from a Dartzeel to our Aries Cerat Quintessence Amplifier and is now selling his integrated amplifier.

Many people are now transitioning away from Dartzeel. I recall reaching out for distribution about seven years ago, and the emails I received came across as quite dismissive.
