Best Speaker for 100k

You know, it's somewhat interesting that I have never been as impressed by Wilson demos with VTL (apparently David and Peter's preferred amplification) as I have hearing Wilson's driven by other high-quality electronics (Lamm, Doshi, D'Agostno, etc)

well I am obviously biased as I love my Lamm ML3's with my Wilson speakers and would never change. Having said that however the VTL Siegfried drove those speakers with grace and ease

Buy a $200k speaker you like used for $100k. It will sound better than a new $100K speaker in most cases depending on the brand/model.

100k is the street price for the apogee grands. No new or used

Welp.. Maybe I'm the oddball here but I would grab me a $30k hooker and make a movie while listening to a pair of $70k Magico S7 speakers and not thnk twice about it

I'd listen to cheaper things too. $100K doesn't guarantee better performance. There's a lot of $50K speakers that are in the same league, they just aren't sold by dealers.

In fact unless the manufacture makes their own drivers, it's almost impossible to receive a very high "value" over others. You're really choosing preference.

I wish I could vote for overly custom drivers like field coils, but sadly he only ones I heard were immensely awful.

If you feel so, just indicate us some particular speakers costing $100k with the same performance of $200k and everyone will be happy!

And yes, it all about preferences. Unfortunately, as an average trend, not as an absolute rule, more expensive means better global results and people seem to prefer them.

Cutting some one margins will surely give some advantage, but it carries risks. Anyway, if some one is just looking for maximum value for money he should be looking in the DIY forums, such as www.diyaudio.com and pick one the many good designs, that as their brave creators often say, offer 99% of the performance of models costing ten times more.

"Audiophilia" is an hobby ruled by preferences. The fact that some state we should spend 10% of the budget in speakers and others state that we should spend 90% there, both using valid reasons, say it all.

As I commented the post of another member, I now feel I should post according to the rules of the thread.

Of all the speakers I have listened in controlled conditions under 100k the best was in a global sense by a large margin the Sonus Faber Aida - yes in Europe it costs under 100k. But as we listen to systems, not to speakers, I must refer its drawback - it needs very powerful and very high quality amplifiers, sources and cables, something that can compromise a budget. But once properly escorted it was a dream speaker.

so start your own thread. thank you.

I would suggest the loudspeaker we brought to The Show in Newport this year... the Evolution Acoustics MMThree EXACT.

They sounded fantastic last weekend! Zep I on Saturday night was a moment I'll never forget.

I can't argue with that JT. They were spectacular when I heard them but darn I missed LZ l on Saturday

Thank you Steve. Blame Lavigne for taking the Led Zeppelin I tape with him. :)

Thanks Keith. As always, the room got better as soon as you came in. :)

That tape was incredible!

Another for TAD R1.
