I was only mentioning that there are many great performances that don't cost an arm and a leg.
I own multiple performances of classical pieces that I love and I enjoy listening to different performances and explore them. For me that's one of the highlights of this hobby.
If people had a lot of knowledge before they started, and the money, I would suggest they buy the good pressing with performance first, and then invest the remaining money in gear, no matter what the compromise on gear. Unfortunately no one starts that way, they start with gear and then learn about pressings, and by then too much money has been lost to spend on it.
I do agree that one should have multiple performances, but there are multiple excellent performances with excellent sonics that are all expensive too.
Harmonia Mundi does some reasonably priced modern performances with good sonics.
