* Did you watch a film last night (on Blu or DVD), and what was it? *

Not as good as The Railway Man but still a very good and heart wrenching movie: Unbroken.

Last night ::

The Artist is Present.jpg

It's a documentary (2012).
Very very different...about modern art. It involves more than looking with our eyes and interpreting and imagining; it involves the direct emotional connection with the artist herself. ...Best to be present.

? Overall (Documentary only): 79.5 ...in (((2D))) only.

Last word: Only for genuine artists. ...From the mind and soul...very tough life.

I usually post in this thread @ the end of my journey (day). ...And today is no exception, just like the reasonable weather outside on this Saturday night, January 16, of the year 2016.
A type of nonchalance day (ordinary without conflicting challenges). ...A normal peaceful day, as usual.

Last night I revisited one of my favorite William Friedkin's flicks (1977) ::

68651_large.jpg

This flick has the right ingredients in it:
good actors with charisma, good storyline, nitroglycerin tension, and good music score by Tangerine Dream, Charlie Parker and Keith Jarrett.
It's not perfect, it's perfectly adequate.

Overall (everything): 85

Last word: If by any malchance you haven't seen it, I recommend you do, very.

I watched this fascinating and eye-opening documentary last night ::

139929_large.jpg

Amy was only 27 (Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and several others died @ age 27 from overdose) when she went to heaven, free resting place (room #2011).
She was just a kid who just wanted to have a normal life and walk freely on the streets with her friends and have fun.
When she became a star that's when she lost her freedom, and eventually her life too. She couldn't go anywhere without being constantly harassed by the paparazzi photographers.
...They don't teach us that @ school; becoming famous worldwide.
She wasn't well supported by her closest entourage, including her dad. Nobody knew how to say no firmly, and they profited from her. ...She had no solid foundation, a true angel guide. Her boyfriend and husband, Blake, from a certain period, in an interview, ...sad because he was lost...with superficial values...most likely caused by heroin.

She was a true genuine young girl with a gifted voice, a voice a la Billie Holiday, and missing solidification in her roots.
It's a retrospective of her youth, some moments of her life, love, friends, family, and her ascent to stardom...with few rehabs sparkled between. @ the end alcohol in her heart killed her.

Great documentary, and some sequences are enlightening. I like the part @ Abbey Road studios in London when she sang in duet with Tony Bennett.

Overall (documentary): 91.5 ?

? Last word: Recommended, very. If you are a Amy's fan like I am this is a Must See. And if you are only curious you'll learn something about life's most fragile aspects that all the fame and money in the world can steal from you. And there were happy times, powerful times, and very down times...like when she did not want to perform. ...Absolutely not, and yet she had to, and she appeared on stage and it was a total fiasco. She was drunk for sure...and maybe high too. I wanted to help her but I couldn't, because she was in that documentary playing on my TV, and she was already dead. But it don't matter, I still wanted to help her.

Amy is on my growing list of must-sees, I'm years behind ... last night I finally got around to watching Ron Howard's 2008 Frost/Nixon.
Frost_nixon.jpg

Well acted, and even tho I watched it after Football and a UFC fight, no further violence to report.

Watched or I should say wasted 90 minutes with this useless movie called Backcountry.

Backcountry_Poster.jpg

No story to speak of. Mediocre acting. Horror film that was more silly than horror. Cliche story of survival. And a few gory scenes thrown in there for good measure.

So many better independent movies out there. How do these get greenlit???

Agreed amirm, didn't much like it either ... thankfully enough time has lapse in which I no longer remember much about it.

Amir, it is an art to select the right music to listen to, it is an art to watch the right flicks...try Ant-Man :b ...Just kidding, kids stuff.

I guess we all follow our own instinct...and that is the normal routine way. Read some film reviews, by some good movie critics first. Life's too short for watching all the crap out there.
Frost/Nixon is a fine film, educational.

* The other day/night you watched The Best Offer with Geoffrey Rush; now that's a good film! ,,, Did you see The Book Thief ? ...You might like it too, again with Geoffrey Rush. ...A very good film in my book.

- I didn't see Backcountry, I watched the trailer, and wasn't thrilled, but was very surprised of this: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/backcountry/
High contrast between pro film reviewers (high rating) and regular audience (low rating).

' A Man in the Wilderness '
Richard Harris
My initial intro to the Glass tale. He was shredded up pretty good for a 70's film. Karen and I saw this in the early 70's when dating. We both liked it at the time. Interestingly enough ' Jeremiah Johnson ' was released around that time also. Somewhat similar but different enough IMHO.

Luv Richard Harris Ron; one of my all time favorite actors. ...He was also in Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood's film).

? Last night, revisited, in (((3D))) ::: Big Hero 6

125553_large.jpg

Great 3D animation, good storyline (smart).
Tagline: Build your own best friend, be inventive, positive, never give up. :b 'Cause what you build might save your life later on, ...and make you eternal. ;-)

Overall (everything; film and technical aspects...3D animated visuals...depth, audio, music score): 90

Last word: See it if you haven't yet, with your kids, and wife (girlfriend). Or alone, with friends; it don't matter, for your eyes only, and everyone else's eyes.
- Good replay value...see more each time...discover...

? Overall (film): 94.5 --------- ? High replay value

Finally saw this for the first time over the holidays - great flick.

The high rating in our cable guide is what made me think it was a good movie. Such movies are passing the time for my wife and I. After dinner we look to see if there is anything good that we can find quickly and watch it. The ratings are usually a good guide but not in this case.

Diminished replay value (somehow quite normal)...except for the ? score (and couple scenes).

Before last night, in (((3D))) :::

141696_large.jpg

Based on a true story; the big mountain and the little people climbing it in all kind of unexpected circumstances...extreme challenges occasionally...like here...and death. Mother nature is unforgivable, no matter how strong and smart we all are.

This based account is in the "Hollywoodian" tradition; not my favorite type. Too much forcing...from the actors, the CGI effects, and the artificial sound pushing. Sure it's dramatic, but it doesn't grab you realistically.

I like snow, I like white snow...it always look great on our screens, and in 3D 'Everest' has its shining moments, just not the consistency...if you get my drift. ...On a scene to scene basis, with the blurriness of the tempest @ high altitude with winds hurling and blasting.

Oh, your subs and surrounds will be enjoying the climb along with your ears, just don't expect miracles as if you were truly climbing yourself because it's not exactly the way it is. It's ok, it is someone's own vision and with the tools provided (Pro Tools). ;-)

The imagery is impressive...@ times (many times). The acting is not particularly my bag; that's my affair.

? Overall (film only): 69 ...and with the technical merits (3D image illusion and sound's fabrication): 80 (the sum of it all).

Last word: Go for it, go for the climb, just don't fall.

I revisited ^ this guy last night, but in 2D this time around.

I enjoyed it more...because I concentrated on the details of the images, decors, props, backgrounds and Mars vistas plus the darkness of space.
And not so much on Matt Damon, which helps adding to the film's production values.
If I would have made that flick, by being the film director, or Ridley Scott's film assistant and casting director, I would have put Birdman in it (Michael Keaton), instead of Matt Damon. ...Or Batman (Christian Bale). ...But that's me, and my own casting choice.

Anyway, the replay value was beneficial and it raised my overall film rating.
Film itself (only) was approximately 66 before, now it's 80 (a 14% improvement, by being able to see less of Matt Damon and more clearly on his surroundings...can you dig); and with technical picture and audio quality added, it merits 91 overall. ...In my own book.

And it's funny too, because other movie critics, in general, seems to be in accord with my own evaluation (more directly score wise).
The Matt Damon "eclipse" thing is my own. To have the "mind skill" of making the main actor disappear/quasi invisible, is a valid quality in cinema of the imagination. ...Whatever works for the better. ...Because that's what films do...create impressions in our entertaining lives. Half of a film is from the actor's convincing us, and the other half is from us being connected and convinced. If the actor is not doing it for us, we can try doing it ourselves by "eclipsing" him/her, and concentrated instead on the more technical aspects of the storyline. ...Like; does it feel like we're on Mars? ...Almost. :b

I watched few flicks in the last week, but nothing worth mentioning much...low budget and kid's stuff.
...And with rating scores (my own) below 50 (mediocre, very).

Last night ::

138664_large.jpg

Then why am I mentioning this one? Because in the past I said I would. And also because it just passed the grade, with an overall rating score of: 65
This is my own personal take:
The film is fine, based on a true story, and the young actors are fine too. Their "poetic justice" is also valid...it's part of their evolution...I respect @ 100%.
It's not my music genre, and that too I respect @ 100%. ...The overall vibes that we all feel in life are what make us who we truly are. ...My view.

I admit, I was irritated @ times...by the music. And nothing can take that away from that moment. It's what it is without being analytical.
It's the "feels" that counts, that overall "feels" of the moment in time and in space.

Last word: See it, and find out for yourself how YOU feel.

Some films we wonder why they were made; it's the same with music and audio gear...
Not long ago I watched two of those; Devil (2010) and Triangle (2009).
...Way below 65 - the reason why I didn't even bother to mention.
1. 'Devil' - Just the name of the script writer is enough to appreciate elevator music. Score: 15 (out of 100)
2. 'Triangle' - Tarantino could have directed it, but that did not happen. Score: 1.5 (out of 100). Over @ Rotten Tomatoes: 82!!!

118775_large.jpg

I very enjoyed it...Cinderella can handle some pain marvelously. ...I was humbled by her all relaxed allure...with those three witches from nowhere land.
Overall (on all aspects of this Blu-ray): 90
Last word: Solid recommendation.

Overall: 20 (film merit).

* I wrote a mini review of this film but my browser went caput, so it's lost!
And with it I lost interest.

This flick used quality cameras because the picture is very pretty and polished.
The sound is impacting.
But everything looks like a commercial. ...With a pretty woman's face with pretty eyes...many closeups of her.

The film is so clean that it looks too antiseptic and like a sci-fi flick advertisement for a new pill.
The actions scenes are fast, very efficient, and they cut like sharp razor knives from Japanese cuisine.
They use guns too and karate/judo/aikido/taekwondo/boxing moves here and there and there.

Mr. hitman (#47) is partnering with Miss hitwoman (#99), but their love story ends there...no sex scene.
Their jobs (careers) take priority...they're on a mission...from god...like the Blues Brothers.

Last word: It's still better than 'The Transformer Refueled'.
It's not American style, it's not French style, it's European style from northern architecture.
It's almost Japanese.

P.S. My previous essay (mini review that I lost) was better...it was more direct and dealing with straight facts...technically and spiritually.
I'm having serious issues recently with my browsers...in the last month or two...slow and problematic, very.

P.P.S. My Google Chrome browser is seriously impaired today. I think I need a new laptop (this one is finito, after 18 months).
I also need about 100 terabytes, and a super computer.
