Doctor's Orders-Part Two-The New Listening Room Of Steve Williams

Steve
I am also looking forward to your comments after replacing your Wilson spikes with the Stillpoints.

I became at bit intrigued with the idea of trying this type of product after hearing the slight improvement during the Norost demos at RMAF. Later than day I had a brief discussion with some of the Wilson people as to what they thought. I will bring it up again in Jerron when I see him next week.

I'm curious what the Wilson people had to say to you

To paraphrase, they don't have time to try all of the options available in the marketplace and they believe that their spiking system does to job very well. I guess it is up to us to do the comparisons. As noted I will follow up next Tuesday when I see them in Ann Arbor.

I am trying to get my arms around how a flat device is going to perform better than my spikes going thru thin carpet onto a concrete floor.

Presently it is frustrating looking at these and not being able to install them until I find some help

Why don't you try them under your other components while you wait ....

Frankly I am afraid to as it might result in an immediate economic hardship on my part if I like them. :)

Stillpoints does recommend putting them under your speakers first, so that you can accurately judge their effects under other components (I'm not kidding, either) :)

Just slip them under your Typhons and see what you think. That's easy enough.

Haha stay away then , I make do with SS Ultras under all my components , some relief ;) I have the V's under my speakers , you are in for a treat !!! ...

I spoke with them, and they immediately said they preferred Wilson spikes by far. Then, I spoke with the Wilson Distributor and he was quite positive about Ultra 5s and Magico QPods. He said you had to be careful when setting them up and on where you use them, but generally was very positive when he visited and saw I had them on. And the Wilson dealer (who does not sell Stillpoints here) said they would be a fantastic upgrade and strongly recommended them.

Question for Lloyd, Christian and any other Wilson owners who are using Ultra 5's In Place of Wilson Spikes

I can't get mine installed until tomorrow morning but I have them laid out on the floor by the speakers and if I follow the instructions of screw the adapter tightly into the Ultra 5 and then the other end into the speaker and tighten to within a credit card thickness, this will raise my speakers ~3/4" higher...........

1.has this caused any or all of you to adjust your upper modules due to change in tweeter to ear distance at the sitting position

2. have you noticed any change in imaging and height of singers and instruments etc

3. To those who said "these will sound like a whole different speaker", could it be as a result of the change in speaker height?

This was my underlying concern with these

Steve,

I looked at the propagation tables and re-checked my values for ear height and distance from speakers. I did not need to adjust them. There is a good bit of leaway. The sound change is all about a big increase in image density between the speakers and a dramatic improvement in bass clarity/transparency.

Nice description, Christian.

Count me as another member-to-be of the Stillpoints club; I've ordered Ultra 5's for my Alexia's.

but it did not make the image of the singer inordinately taller I hope????

A suggestion to help alleviate some of your concerns would be to temporarily raise your listening chair approximately 3/4" before the installation to see if it makes a difference to you.

If it does, then after the installation you could do the same by raising the listening seat in order to get back to the original listening position-to-tweeter height that concerned you.

There are many things to put under the listening seat you could find to raise the height temporarily. One that comes to mind quickly would be a 1x2 or 1x4 piece of lumber cut to fit under the feet of the listening seat. I think it is approximately 0.73"-0.70" in thickness.

Maybe this will be helpful to you,
Dre

Definitely helpful and I've considered it but don't want to out it in the carpet. I'm thinking some firm cushion for the seat. I've worked hard with upper module adjustments in order to create a life like image. I don't want to lose that.

According to wikipedia, a 1 x 4 is "exactly" 3/4" thick..
