EAT Tubes vs. NOS Tubes

Did we ever figure out if EAT is actually manufacturing 9 pin miniature tubes or if they are simply buying NOS tubes and gluing their barrel on them? Since I have recently seen pictures of their 6922 tubes and one pair had gold pins and the other pair didn't, I'm betting on them buying up NOS tubes.

I was finally able to test drive the 6H23 tubes in my system. For the last month, I been waiting for my new motor for my Tw TT. My understanding is the 6H23 has a different sound then a 6922, although I am not sure what/how that translates to music and the frequency distribution. But the tubes and the motor are one major upgrade to the system. Its quite an experience! These tubes are very quite for now...........they may not last but time will tell!

Congrats...a few questions. Is the 6H23 tube a replacement for the 6922 in ANY piece of equipment designed for the 6922...or is that equipment specific (ie, check with the manufacturer)? Also, is there a specific brand or make of 6H23 you recommended or were recommended to try?

How is the 6H23 sound supposedly different from 6922s? (BTW, that may be a hard question to answer as 6922s themselves have quite varied sound.)

LL;

I can not give you a definitive description of it sound based on my experience. I do think that the 6H23 sound is a little elevated in the upper mid-range based on using the Gold Lion reissue. I was able to tone this down using brass and ebony in various tuning spots on the TT.

Yes you can use the 6H23 in 6922 locations. Upscale audio has them but there versions are not good for phono stages. I went to Galen Carol in TX. I hope this helps! There is no brand name on my boxes so I do not about different mfg's.

Hi Zermatt...thank you! yes, that definitely helps, and I will do some digging. My current Mullard CV2493s just went in to replace an aging pair, so it is time for me to consider what I might get as a back up pair...which if supremely better, might end up being my primary pair of course!

What happened to the gold pins?

That's why I have been saying that EAT is not manufacturing their own 6922 tubes. If you like gold pins on your miniature tubes (and who doesn't?), it's the luck of the draw with EAT tubes. Some people received tubes with gold pins and current customers aren't. Are you sure these aren't Sovtek 6922 tubes?

It's impossible to tell at first glance because the damping ring totally obscures the inner workings.

I think Brent JEssee thought they were Czech made Teslas or something? cannot recall

I just received my EAT EC88 Tube Diamond series today. No gold pins. Sent an email to ask about them and here is part of the response below. Looks like the newer ones will not have gold pins anymore.
Also the Red part is not glued on and moves easily. I did not think of removing it to see what the actual tube looked like. I have only just put it in today and not had a chance to sit down and have a real listen. Was using a cryotreated NOS 6DJ8 MATSUSHITA before this one and thought it was pretty good and very quiet.

RESPONSE:
Thank you for purchasing our EAT cool valves. You bought a latest production. We do not coat pins with gold composite anymore. According to our tests it has not really different condactivity properties.

Hello and welcome to the forum, rocky500. I find EAT's response about the gold pins a little surprising. Apparently they haven't tested any old tubes when they performed their conductivity properties.

dUH [to the manufacturer],
Gold plated pins have never been about the conductivity, but the gold plate is anti-corrosive. Minimizing corrosion over the years MAINTAINS the proper conductivity. Many other metals are more conductive [but Corrode]. Testing NEW [please note NEW] pins with the metals commonly used will not show favorable differences for the gold.

Now another issue: the gold plate can scrape off as the pins are inserted; back to square one.

Yeah like the early Chinese tubes. I often wondered if they painted the gold on the pins for effect! :)'

Any updates? What can I say...very interested in your findings! ;)

The cool dampers should just slide off, mind the silicone spacer locations though as they determine correct 'tension' on the glass, important for good damping..
