Field-Coil Speaker Review: the Wolf von Langa SON

Wonderful report on the Sons. Today, Colin and another colleague of mine are experimenting with raising the Sons height by a few inches to see what the effects are, especially for taller users where their lower height may affect image height and scale. I notice your terraza style floors but presume you have a rug between you and the speakers. For me, once hearing the Sons going back to box speakers (even ones like Harbeth) is hard to do.

Enjoy!
Curious what you settle on. I have Wellfloat isolation bases on order which will raise them up two or so inches but not any higher than the Gaia footers that I’ve seen used. I’ll share my impressions after they arrive.

Congratulations, David! They look beautiful!

Has anyone tried bi-wiring their Son’s? I noticed an improvement when I took this route.
Hmm, very well could be on my agenda in the new year. For now, I will enjoy them and honestly get to know them better in my various systems here. First up is getting jumpers to match my existing speaker cables — Van den Hul 3T Air Flat. I like them more and more and forgot I even had them boxed, sitting on a shelf in my storage closet.

Yes, I recommend it. The included jumpers are good (use the top set of the bottom four binding posts when single wiring) but the speakers let you hear your system. Nice improvement.

Did you add the Wellfloat base for the anesthetics (they go together well) or to raise the speaker a bit higher?
It was for vibration isolation since I had them directly on the floor previously and didn’t have feet for them yet. The added height though only 2” does make a difference and it’s a coincidence that the Wellfloat sizing is perfect for the sons. The price for two Wellfloat bases also seems to be lower than 8 footers when looking at higher end ones.

Good morning,

I've had a pair of Sons for a month (replacing Klipschorn from the 70's) and currently power it with a LoStereo from Atelier du Triode (italian 2A3 PP, interstage transformers, RCA black plate).
The main source is an Innuos Zen/Computer Audio Design CAD1543.

The sound is very good, balanced, transparent/detailled, soft at the top and quite dynamic. I really appreciate these speakers.

I have in mind that it could be a bit better with richer tones, even if I lost a bit in localization.
I owned during many years and with a lot of pleasure an Audio Note system, so localization is not my first concern.

I would have few questions for those who have try it :) :

Does a 300B SE (8/9 w) could be enough ?
My room is 10 by 4 meters.
It's an apartment so neighbors sometimes come and knock on the door, but most of the listenings are at a reasonable level.
I asked because there are not so much 300B PSE on market.

Knowing that the budget for a second hand unit is around 5K (there is no urgency, so I can wait the good opportunity), what would be your suggestions as integrated amp?
I identified :
- Audio Note Meishu (a silver version at least). I owned the Silver Signature and even if it's not the more dynamic 300B, I loved a lot this amp.
- New Audio Frontiers Supreme (300B PSE) or 845 SE
- Mastersound 845 (even if I usually prefer the 300B)
- NAT Audio Single HPS
- Line Magnetic AS125 (never owned a 211 amp)
- Ayon Crossfire (but I am not sure that tones will be richer than with my current amp)
- Viva Audio Solistino
- Trafomatic ?

Any feedback or suggestion?

Thanks for all
Best
Ugo

Sorry for my english, I never practice it.

Hello. I've had no experience running a 300b amp with the Sons, but in my shop, I demo the WVL Ultimas with either the Grandinote Essenza or the Thoress EHT. Both work very well. Like the amps you mention, they are class A, with the Thoress being single ended.

Good luck with your search! You have some outstanding speakers.

When I emailed Wolf years ago about these speakers I told him I was using a 300B amp and he mentioned that’s what he was using too.

Hi Ugo. Are you considering a preamplifier? Your 2A3 integrated amp appears to be very good, but it may have a very simple passive volume control (I'm not sure). Adding a high quality preamp will help add the richer tones you are looking for and may also improve soundstage width and dynamics.

Thanks to all for your replies.

About Thoress and Grandinote, may be I am wrong but I know that I will always have in mind that with a SET it could sound differently.
I had in the past a Spec Corp RSA M3, which I consider as a very good amp, but sold it for this reason.
It's probably a mental sickness but I have to live with.
Yes, I only indicated integrated amplifier. In fact I try to keep the system "compact" and easy to use for the rest of the family (but the main concern is compact). I owned in the past Pre + amp (audio note M8 + P4 balanced or others) but I don't have pleasure to see everyday big hifi gear in the living room. It's also the reason which I sold my Klipschorn and in the past other speakers as JBL 9500.
To be honest, there is a good opportunity on a pair of audio note conquest silver signature. I appreciate these amps and owned it in the past. I am pretty sure that the match with the SON would be good but the idea to come back on preamp + 2 monoblocks makes me a bit reluctant.

Sorry for these neuroses. :)
