Foie Gras in California

We have a German friend that I met as a colleague with CDC. Whenever, Karen and I would be invited over for dinner he would always make white asparagus with an egg based sauce. Convinced I would be converted.
I, of course, would counter with green and hollandsaise

Speaking of asparagus, it is one of those most disappointing things to try to grow. Every time I plant them, I get think sticks and then I manage to kill them the follow year . Anyone has had success growing them?
