Golden Gate DAC arrives.

Hi Bill,

Just a FYI. I'm using my I3 broadwell NUC as an HQ player server resampling redbook to DSD 256 with Windows 10. So far on song 9 of an album without 1 stutter :) It couldn't do it without stuttering with Windows 8.1.

However the CPU load is quite high. But I'm sure the I7 NUC would have no problem. Best of all fits in the palm of your hand!

Thank you, Blizz.

I do wonder whether I should check hqplayer again because I tried it last when I first upgraded to Windows 10 and i noticed that there were some reports of issues with early versions of Windows 10...

Yes and also make sure pipeline SDM, and SDMdirect are checked. As well as some filters/modulators are more CPU demanding than others. You can see in my screen shot which filters/modulators I prefer. The filters with -2 beside them are the least CPU demanding.

What is SDM and SDMdirect?

What is SDM and SDMdirect?

What pipelineSDM does is splits the cpu load evenly over all the cores of your CPU. What SDM direct does is bypasses an extra stage of filtering required for volume control etc with DSD. If playing a DSD track with SDMdirect enabled, your getting a pure feed from the track without any of the HQplayer filtering manipulating the sound. It's the purest way possible to listen to DSD sourced from a PC. When it's enabled while resampling PCM to DSD, it's an extra layer of sound degrading, CPU load increasing processing disabled.

It's the same difference as going through the SDM/SRC section of the AK4490 chip, rather than bypassing and going direct to the low pass filter.

What many people don't realize is HQplayer is not just another media player. It's a replacement for processes that normally happen inside resource constrained DAC chips. Only it does a much better job. So if you have a DAC like the GG that allows you to bypass the internal processing of a DAC chip, you have exactly the type of DAC HQplayer was intended for. So unless you do things Bruce's way with the $3800 Pyramix mastering pack DAW, your not going to hear better sound from your GG.

And also make sure "none" is checked under SDMpack. As well as the ASIO driver for the Amanero. This is the only way you'll get the Amanero to do DSD 256. As it will be streaming DSD natively with this setting.

Oh great - thanks for that, Blizz. Will give that a try in a bit.

Many thanks,

Bill

What integrator and noise filter do you use under ds diff/dsf setting?

It doesn't matter. Those settings are only for if SDMdirect is disabled. All that is bypassed when SDMdirect is enabled. Are you using an NAA? If so what are you using for the NAA computer?

No NAA here, Blizz.

Makes a big difference with the stock Amanero. Acko figures with his reclocker it shouldn't matter, as all the hardware variables upstream of the DAC become null and void.

Okay - playing native dsd and sounding wonderful.

For PCM upsampling, do I need to change any settings other than the normal filters choice?

My favorite filter is Poly-sinc-short-mp and modulator DSD5V2. Also change buffer time to 250ms, and max vol to -2db in settings. Combined with SDMdirect, pipelineSDM, and "none" for SDMpack, that's all you need to do. Set the SDM to default to those settings in settings so you don't have to keep changing. Oh yeah and make sure its on 11289600 for quad DSD.

No idea what is going on. Can't get a PCM track to even play now - after you press play, it does nothing.

Do you have it on the ASIO driver? Backend "ASIO" If not it won't do Quad DSD. Also make sure the SDMpack is "none"

This is how everything should look when setup properly with the Amanero. Only difference might be there may be a different name for the Amanero driver under "device":

Sorry. Can I suggest you start a new HQPlayer thread? It is a bit off topic.

Sorry, but it is on topic for those who want to hear their GG sounding the best possible. It can also have the potential of saving GG owners thousands on the PCM section. We will see what Audiophile Bill has to say.

I shared all the tips I need to share about HQ player setup now anyways

No. You hijack everything here. HQPlayer is for every DAC. You do not have a Lampizator DAC let alone GG. How can you advise owners here to get best out of GG. Your comments about HQPlayer are best is to say HQPlayer is a superior DSD converter. It has nothing to do with GG.

If you understood how DAC's work, or read what I have said, you would understand why software like this is required to play PCM through the DSD section of the GG. Sure other software can resample PCM to DSD, but it all sucks at it (except maybe Pyramix @ $3800). When using HQplayer with a standard SDM DAC, you are not getting the best out of it. It's specifically designed for chipless DSD DAC's just like the GG. Next best is DAC's with chips that have a "DSD Direct" mode.

There is a long thread of HQPlayer in computer audiophile. Most of them praise HQplayer for superior DSD upsampling for every DAC known on earth. HQPlayer is not just for chipless DSD. I do not think Miska also claim that. FYI, I also have bought HQPlayer many moons ago. Don't to pretend you are expert on everything.

Now I can understand why you are making so many friends here.

Yes it works with all DAC's, but it works "best" with chipless DSD DAC's. Please copy and paste where I said HQplayer is "just for chipless DSD"

The idea behind creating HQplayer in the first place was so simple lowpass filter DSD DAC's like the GG can be used with PCM. For example Jussi's own chipless DSD DAC:
