Golden Gate DAC arrives.

I'll be speaking with Lukasz in the next couple of days about a GG Head Dac build and will offer to act as a guinea pig for the Acko usb card if he is game.

Am surprised nobody seems to have mentioned that the R2R appears to have been resurrected from Big 6, aka Fikus dac, his erstwhile personal favourite model.

If he just licences the Gerber file for the board from Acko, he could build the boards equipped with Crystek 957 clocks for around $100 a piece. $485 is turnkey full retail including the Amanero.

Acko's price on a turnkey board without Amanero is only $235. Unless someone wanted an extra Amanero, buying the one with Amanero wouldn't be necessary.

Also, this board doesn't just reclock, it has extremely effective isolation circuitry that kills the noise coming from the connected computer. It will make a $150 netbook, sound better than a Lampi Komputer without it, if running the same media software.

Different implementation Mark (this is Ladder PCM, likely with some kinda FPGA control). Apparently more advanced.

Sure if someone plunks down for a special exotic $500 part, I am sure he would accomodate. However, based on that website, its a 4 week wait for the part (what business can be run off that lead time, especially as its clearly NOT gonna be supplied in volume)? You best bet is the $160 upgraded Amanero that Blizz referred to, as that is likely to be more quickly available. Just putting $500 increase to the BOM without amazing results is a non-no in a manufacturing business...I'm just saying..

The thing about the Lampi's is they are super easy to mod. This is because they were designed by a modder. Other DAC's that have all SMT components, nested tightly on a single PCB, are much harder to mod. But this is a good thing. I like the modular, easily upgradable design of the Lampi's. It keeps them from being disposable.

If I do decide to start this service, I would make a fresh 5 year warranty on the complete DAC once the mod is preformed. So people can stop worrying about warranty.

modding the modders work....lol. That's how things move forward. I think your points are valid and the USB board is a potential weak link.

If this is true, one does not need any USB Regen or expensive USB cable. Then it would be quite a saving and a bargin upgrade then.

Or an expensive, tweaked to the max computer. You'll save thousands there.

The upgraded Amanero with better clocks etc will not be near as good as the reclocker. As I mentioned, it's a $235 part. $485 includes Amanero which is not needed. Waiting 4 weeks is only for the full Amanero equipped board as he doesn't stock Amanero's. He has the units in stock already that aren't equipped with Amanero's.

Stop the "trolling" then and post the direct link to the $235 board. The other links you posted did not have it...

Link, or it doesnt exist.

This thread appears to have become a carbon copy of one on computer audiophile a month ago.

I know Blizz from there where he tried to trash the Regen. The gospel according to Blizz.
Nobody is saying some of his ideas are not good, on the contrary. However, he oversells like he knows from direct experience when he does not. Bashing things you have no direct experience is ...well plain DUMB. He should simple suggest what he hinks is a likely outcome based on tangential experience or educated conjecture and leave it at that. That is what truly emotionally intelligent people would do.

I have no experience with the Amanero? I just posted a video soldering header posts on one.

I said nothing about the Amanero.

I know you know the amanero, but you keep skirting the real curveballs. You have no Lampi experience and you keep touting galvanic isolation when I already told you that true galvanic isolation is done by virtually nobody and would cost $$$$$$.

I have nothing against your ideas, but your style sometimes...

Try to moderate that and more sucess will easily flow your way.

I used HQPlayer for almost a year. Even had the Phasure in here for a couple of months.
I've moved on ..... Next!

Lol. What are you using now, Bruce?

This mod I'm talking about is an Amanero mod. The Amanero is an 3rd party transport that the GG uses to decode the DSD/PCM data out of the USB stream, clock it, and send to the DAC boards. It doesn't matter if it's installed in a $100 DAC kit, or a $100000 exotic commercial DAC, it's performance is still the same in stock form. Improving it will make the same caliber of difference no matter which DAC it's installed in as well. Unless of course the DAC already has some type of reclocking/isolation device in the chain already. Looking at the GG boards, it's clear that this DAC does not.

Did you use it with an NAA setup upsampling all PCM to DSD 256? If so, how does it compare to the R2R DAC section with straight PCM? The chipless DSD DAC I'm currently using is exceptional with PCM upsampled to DSD 256. In fact the best PCM I've ever heard.

I don't believe Bruce has the r2r PCM module yet Blizz - this is very new indeed.

We have been discussing the virtues of hqplayer upsampling for absolutely ages and ages - done to death in fact. I will be testing r2r PCM implementation versus dsd upsampling this weekend. I don't think it will be black and white since the quality of the computer transport will ultimately influence the end result. My laptop can't reliably quad upsample PCM in hqplayer but can in foobar. I will be testing laptop via ifi iusb or Regen dsd upsampled versus PCM r2r.
