Golden Gate DAC arrives.

Hi Mike,

Great to hear that the Elrog 300B's are working out so well for you on your Lampi GG. They would be my first choice too. Have you ever had the opportunity to compare the Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7 USB Cable to the Totaldac USB Cable? I'm currently getting terrific results with the Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7 USB Cable on my Esoteric K-01X DAC. Amazing transparency with tremendous detail and nuance.

Best,
Ken

Ken, I have both and prefer the Totaldac in my system.

the Elrog 300b-Takatsuki 274b combo on the GG is fantastic!!

I got home late tonight/early this morning from my brief business trip to Miami......stopped at my work on my way home from the airport to pick up the Tak 274b that arrived Monday. and just now plugged it in.

stone cold and brand new the Tak 274b recti takes things a significant bit further after a brief listen. lower noise floor, more detail, more holographic, and even sexier. it builds on the Elrog's strengths, and then adds a bit of dynamic energy and authority.

more real.

got to get to bed now but i'll be having sweet dreams......

Gosh Mike, i HOPE yr Elrogs last.
When I was running Audion Black Shadow SETs last yr, I went thru THREE pairs of Elrog 845s in 9 months.
They were stunning re SQ, absolutely SHOCKING re unreliability. Unacceptable.

That's great news about the Tak 274 and I'm sure the goodness will intensify as it burns in.

He is using the Total Dac. I use the Corning with Regen green.

Morning Norman, it's worth noting that Bill's comments on my Sablon usb cable were actually relative to his own TotalDac one. There's a full comparison in his latest review which is now live on Positive Feedback. Cheers Mark

Oh crap! I was hoping it was not worth the money. Dracule88 (AudioCircle) was right about the combo, as you have confirmed his findings. He says the Taks are beautiful in reality too.

Lets see what the EML Anniv. GLOBE Mesh 45 sounds like.

Great. Thanks for making that clear, Mark.

No, the 845s are hopelessly unreliable, unlike the 300bs that were apparently fixed in later runs.

Besides, in a Dac, they are run with a preamp type load.

So Wisnon, Mike SHOULD be ok w/the Elrogs? I do hope so, they are genuinely stunning tubes.

after overnight warm up even a little better. more grounded and sure footed.

listening now to full scale orchestral and liking it. has that shimmer and tonal fire with strings, but still a calmness and ordered soundstage. nothing sloppy. great articulation and texture from drums and large scale music. lots of musically significant detail. sucks you in.

certainly not in any way closed in, but I expect they will open up more.

do I have to go to work today?

Mike is more than 'ok'.:D

I realize you were speaking to reliability. and I was speaking about my listening. but the Elrog's seem perfectly behaved so far after a week and 50-60 hours.

and the exceptional build quality of the Takatsuki 274b as a recti likely only helps keep things stable.

I learned these tricks from Ralph Karsten of Atmasphere. When I get new tubes, I burn-in them without applying HV for about 100 hours - I just take out the B+ fuse of the old MV125 amplifier I use for this purpose.

In normal use the tube should be warmed for two minutes before applying HV - a time delay relay is great for this purpose. Using these two methods, the early failure rate reduced to almost zero in hundreds of tubes.

How is this done? By HV you mean high voltage?

In the Atmasphere power amplifiers we can apply filament power before switching the high voltage (HV) power - it has separate switches. Since the MB 750 had there separate power transformers filament, drive and power tubes, it was easy to insert a delay relay in the power on sequence. The 6922 tube is considered a nightmare in terms of reliability - I have learned from people who claim much longer life of their tubes using this power on scheme. My Metronome C2A DAC burns them fast, but as they are only two, inexpensive and I have a large stock I did not worry about it yet. Perhaps Ralph will chime on this subject - he has large experience and knowledge on it.

You didn't notice the two switches on my amps Bonzo?
One for filaments and one for B+. Filaments on 30s - 60s then apply B+, CL80 thermistor for slow ramp-up.
There should be a further switch to switch out the fuse and thermistor but haven't got around to implementing
this additional circuit.

Jac has some info on burn-in on his site that relates to 'forming' the filament. I understand new tubes shouldn't be run more than 5 hrs a day for a month until the filament becomes 'toughened'.

Interesting that folks are now using the best manufactured tubes in their GGs. Something I suggested many posts back but met with disinterest.

I'm interested in EML mesh globes. Remember the aubergine coloured globes? Now they would look fine against the gold of a GG.
