Golden Gate DAC arrives.

the driver tubes are anywhere from $30 to $900 each x2. (you can spend $5k each for the right Western Electric 300B's.....but that value is more rarity than performance according to many).

the rectifiers are about $70 to $900 x1.

the particular tubes we are speaking about here; a pair of Elrog 300b's are approx. $1100, and the Takatsuki 274b recti is $965.

Expensive little tweaks. But I guess that's what makes this hobby interesting :)

You GG's guys should try the system I'm talking about in this thread:

http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showt...he-big-boys-for-under-250&p=359576#post359576

For under $250 it will likely make a bigger difference than all the fancy, expensive isolating tweaks. Also no modding required. Chipless DSD DAC's like the GG, are what will benefit most from this system.

Here we go again ... Speaking for myself I am not interested .. Leave it up to Lukasz to improve his (GG) dacs because unlike you he actually listens to his components ... So please stick to your own thread.

This isn't an internal mod, it's a streamer to connect to the DAC. Anyways I suppose you won't be upgrading to Lukasz's new USB interface either since he got the idea to do it from my post's on this thread.

I think you will need to order it from Amtrans in Japan Rudolf

Thanks for your reply. So no Takatsuki distribution or any Takatsuki dealers in Europe if I understand you correctly?

If a modification by the manufacturer after serious listening tests turns out to be an improvement I am always interested.

It was an improvement after the listening tests where he realized it, just the same as it would have been at the time I posted a picture of the board on here that you all frowned upon.

Better clocks are never a detriment to sound. Anyways don't expect an external streamer to sound as good as this $250 unit coming from Lampi for under $6000. I'll leave you to your thread now.

In fact, I think it was unfortunate you had, if I remember right, only one tube the EML 45 during your demo. The EML 45 (not mesh globe annivs), are the worst sounding of the Lampi lot to my ears. I was initially only for 101d replica, now KR 242 are way superior, as are good 300bs. All my Lampi comparisons with other digital were with 101ds on Big 7, so I can only imagine how much better it has got now with better valves, better PCM, and a higher model. I also have a better recti now, the KR 274b

Morning Kedar. I'm not sure if you are aware that Barry has an extensive collection of 45 tubes to play with from his lovely Dr Low Mu amps eg various nos 45s (ST and globe), numerous EML models including two pairs of globe anniversarys from my group buy a year ago. Of these, the solid plate version has a number of good qualities regarding dynamics / timing. The psvane 101d replica errs towards a leaner presentation which might suit the rounder / darker sounding duelund caps of your older B7 better than the more linear Jupiters of later B7 / GG dacs. We did play a little with rectiifiers, however the GZ34 metal base which many recommend took the performance back several notches compared to the EML5u4g. As always, circuits / tastes / systems etc may vary however the latest user reports about KR242 / elrog 300b / tak 274b are very promising. Perhaps there will be some fuse rolling next.....

I am using a wooden rack resting on Halcyonics/Accurion Vario 40 magnetic decouplers. The GG dac rests on three Shun Mook ultra feet and is connected through a Tripoint Thor se to the Tripoint Troy se. I like this combination a lot.

Btw, I will start with tuberolling in the near future as I have a ordered a matched pair of Elrog 300b tubes after Mike's positive experiences and Lukasz's confirmation that the technical specs of the GG dac should allow you to use these tubes safely. However I also learned that two GG dac users had failures with the Elrog 300B tubes so I do not quite know what to expect.

Hopes this give you some insight Bill.

Was wondering if any GG owner has tried the Takatsuki 300b tubes and how they compare to the Elrog 300b tubes.

Morning, Rudolph. Thanks for your reply - it looks like both you and Mike are indeed already taking this issue very seriously. Including grounding as well sounds interesting.

I am about to receive the Kr 300b balloons and Kr Px-4s - will be interesting to see how these perform.

What do the GG dac owners think of the dxd format in comparison to dsd recordings? I heard today my first dxd recordings in the LA set up and I found them very impressive. Have had no time yet to compare these dxd files to the dsd 256 version of these recordings but I really like what I am experiencing at the moment.

If DXD was the native format, then it's very comparable to DSD.

The KR 300b are better than 101d replicas but the KR 242 are much better than them in the big 7, though the latter don't work with the GG. Might upgrade to GG and get it customized for the 242 and 300.

Thanks Bruce. Yes, they were recorded in dxd. Just started listening to their dsd 256 version: very strangly my first impression is that the latter is more precise and better focussed than the former while this does not make much sense to me: my guess upfront would have been the other way round. Probably I need more listening experience to reach final conclusions.

Pricejapan.com has the best price on the Tak tubes. I have ordered from them several times.

Thanks dmiches. So this is a reliable source if I understand you correctly? How robust are the Tak valves: did you ever had any reliability problems with them?
