Golden Gate DAC arrives.

Elrog 300b + Takatsuki 274b.

2 weeks into it now.

this combo is superb on the GG on all types of music. it does scale, it does bloom, it gets drum kit textures and impact. never rounded, yet rich and fiery. very nuanced. most of that came with the Elrogs but the Tak added a degree of transparency, authority and push. it grounded things.

solo piano, vocals, and horns are wonderful. tone and timbre to die for.

I've not heard all the choices. but I'm in no hurry to hear anything else.

I have the Psvane 101d replica's and 300b replica's. and the EML 274b.

Thanks Mike. Then I think I will try to acquire some of the Elrogs then - if you are getting the authority, fire and push yet with the bloom and texture then that is surely the holy grail. Jealous. I can't get it all in one go at the moment so sounds like you have stumbled upon heaven. I would love to see what result you would get sticking your golden gate on your vibraplane - I think it might give you a real gain. I would expect an even deeper and wider soundstage with more 3D and natural tone.

I do not have a Vibraplane; however I do have 2 Herzan active isolation shelves; a TS-150 for my darTZeel preamp, and a TS-140 for my Wave Kinetics tt.

currently I use Wave Kinetics A10 U8 footers underneath the Golden Gate. they do a good job with decoupling, but I do agree that a Vibraplane would be a step better and the Herzan another step better. at $12k (for another TS-140) adding another Herzan is not likely for now. but I can't say it's not crossed my mind. I'm a believer.

I do hope you add the Elrog-Tak. btw; Audiocrack has the Elrog's (and had a positive 1st impression) and I think he was pursuing the Tak 274b too. you might get his feedback.

Okay - cheers, Mike. I will look for a good and reliable supplier and then move forwards. If Rudolph managed to acquire them, perhaps he knows someone in Europe. Will see. Btw - have you listened to your dsd analogue rips on the GG yet? I have been making double dsd rips from my Kuzma all weekend direct to my Tascam da-3000. They sound extraordinary.

Try the gentleman- Myers, from vinylsavor.com

Try also the UK Design version of the PSvane 300B, for circa $300 a pair. That is a sleeper, I am told. I have and love the EML 300b as well.

Until you get the Tak, try the $88 RCA 1944 5r4gy from Arizona. I posted the contact info on AudioCircle weeks ago. Mike L has one and can comment on it from value play perspective.
DSo you have the GG Mooked? I just picked up some used ones and will try when I get back home in a couple weeks.

Hi Norman,

Thanks for that. In terms of the psvane 300b - which one as there is the regular, the black bottle, and a grey bottle and the we replica. I heard the black bottle was meant to be good in amps...

The GG is mooked on the tubes with resonators and has discs on the chassis. I am going to put the ultra diamonds under it tomorrow too.

From a guy who owns both.vibraplane and mooks, I heard that. The former was better under TTs and latter under his components. I.will her a vibraplane when I.get a TT and try under both

Hi Norman,
I am going to put the ultra diamonds under it tomorrow too.

If possible I will be interested to know how mooks on top of your stand under GG compare to mooks under GG without stand, I.e. Directly on the floor or a cheap wooden shelf.

In short are mook effects better maximized or additive? I know with the SRA one feedback was that sound was best without SRA directly with mooks on the floor

I bought my Elrog 300b tubes at vinylsavor in Germany. Due to some failures in the past Thomas of vinylsavor was not too happy when I informed him that I was planning to use the Elrogs with the GG dac. However, looking only at the technical specs this combo should work.

I have played this combo for about 12 hours or so and I clearly prefer the Elrog 300b to the 101d tubes that were originally supplied with the GG dac. But please keep in mind that I love the sound of the 300b tube in general as I use these tubes in my Kondo Gakuoh power amps as well. That said I recognize what Mike reported earlier about his musical experiences in this thread.

So far the Elrog tubes proved to be reliable but I do not know yet wether this may change in the future. Only time will tell. Purely on musical grounds I love the Elrogs 300b tubes in my GG dac.

Maybe I should add the following: Mike and I are not the first audiophiles to use the Elrog 300b tubes with the GG dac. Apart from some reliability issues all reports about this combo have been very positive indeed. To my ears rightly so: I love the fuller bass performance and the (less mechanical) overall presentation. Also the tonality feels clearly more 'real' than with the 101d's.

BTW, if everything goes according to plan I will pick up next Thursday a pair of Takatsuki 300B tubes. Would like to have an alternative to the Elrog 300B tubes in case they turn out to be not reliable (but sofar so good and I really love what they, that is the Elrog 300b tubes, are doing in combination with the GG dac!). I need to order the Takatsuki 274b from outside the country so that might take a while.

Hi all,

Well a brand new pair of Kr PX-4 tubes arrived this morning and straight out the box they are the best tubes I own. They have the super 3D effect like a 300b but with a lot more resolution even than my 101d. The bass is very hefty and vocals are spooky real. Just started with the Eml 274b recti but will try others later.

I'm particularly loving what the Elrog-Tak-GG combo does on my 2xdsd vinyl rips. maybe it's how it works with my darTZeel pre-amp combo? just the right balance? I don't know. but whatever......there is a magical synergy to those files now. maybe the Entreq Poseidon is kicking in?

this is digital that has nothing in common with any digital I've ever heard. even better 'maybe' than my Quad dsd files. probably more a recording issue than format issue. those 2xdsd vinyl rips are sourced from absolutely great vinyl.......and you can't hold back that music. the 15ips 1/4" 2xdsd files are likewise very special.

I'm listening to a 2xdsd tape rip of Lloyd Glenn and Clarence Gatemouth Brown right now that is transcendent. i'll have to listen to that source tape later.

sometimes everything comes a little more together.

No experience with the Elrog-Takatsuki combo but the dsd 128 vivyl files have always sounded lovely to me Mike. You can so easily identify the fluidity/smoothness or absense of any 'stress' that is so characteristic for analog replay. No, it is not as good as analog replay itself, but damn good in its own right.

Fancy something exotic that no one else will have? Got to ebay USA and search for "SIF PTT 10F". He's been trying to sell them for ages and the price has dropped.

Could be very good. Then again...

They look cool - the whole grid structure is at the top of the tube mounted horizontally. Vive la France!

totally agree.

2xdsd + vinyl = pleasure.

Where did you get them from Bill?
