Anybody following this series notice in various background scenes equipment that you may have owned long ago? I noticed Phase Linear 4000 Auto Correlator preamp and 400 power amp, TEAC A-6100 tape deck and Nakamichi 700 cassette deck.

I watched the two hour Pilot and wondered when it was finished decided to give to one more go. After the next episode I stopped recording it. Each show had about 5 entertaining minutes and the rest just a bunch of crap. I was hoping for much better based on the cast and many of HBO's prior efforts.

I'm an episode behind, but it's still in the "will see" camp. when its about the music industry, its interesting - but with the murder and all the more typical plotlines, it loses me. the cast is excellent.

the ratings have been pretty soft, although it was renewed for a second season.

The only real issue I am having with the series is that every time I see a cassette deck with an exotic silver brushed front panel and a back-light behind the cassette window, I forget about the drama itself and go into nostalgia mode. Actually, I end up having to replay most of the scenes with audio equipment in them!

I absolutely love the show. I agree the murder thread is a storyline one can get elsewhere, but HBO on demand has some making of shorts that tell how mick jagger came up with the idea and that some real stories from that Era were not told because they're too unbelievable. My point is the murder story may be based on reality, which is why they may have decided to include it. (Scary thought)

I believe on one recent episode in Richie's house there was a nakamichi Dragon. Anyone notice that?

In general it's so much fun to see all that 70's audio gear prominently displayed. I was a young kid at that time but love the look of retro gear, but listen only to new equipment (though someday my TAD speakers will be retro and I'll be he old fart that still holds on to them.

I just have a question for you guys in the States. Is it only on Pay TV where you guys are? Here in Australia, we only get it via Foxtel Pay TV.

i think you might find the murder is not just a function of story rather used to in part anxiety and jeopardy also guilt. it forms part of the exploration of the lead character and helps you empathise with his character and the effects drugs can have also.

it brings weight to his emotions, its a secret that's shared with the viewer too, this helps create a bond of interest between viewer and the lead also .

Yes...HBO (Home Box Office) shows it here. It is a premium pay subscription channel.

Thanks Christian. Good to know I am not paying for something others are getting for free! Here in Australia, for example, I now have to pay to watch UK BBC content as well, unless I am happy to wait around 18 months for (only a portion of it) to go to free to air.

I see HBO has canceled the series.

it had potential, but let's face it - season 1 wasn't very good and the ratings were awful. it turned a cool subject into a cliche'd mob story.

I thought the pilot was a total mess, but I thought the series improved somewhat from there. Still . . . +1 on Keith's post.

It is a pity that is not being renewed. I accept there were flaws but I thought the acting and capture of the period was very good (at least for an over-hyped, entertainment-driven, stereotypical fictional representation of the era) and many of the sub-plots were interesting. It wasn't actually the mob side of the story that did not gel with me but perhaps more the Jamie Vine character - constantly bedding herself with whoever, whomever and whatever on a drug-infused whim. I mean yes, I am sure that back then drugs - as is the case today - were a lot bigger than what you'd find in the friendly neighbourhood pharmacy but I have to wonder if the drug side of it was actually as blown out of proportion as the mobster side of it was!

That said, it is all fiction and it is supposed to be entertainment which to me is exactly what it was. I will actually miss it quite a lot. And I will miss seeing Ray Romano in role that to me was probably his defining one as an actor in a serious drama. I was really looking forward to season 2 so to read Ron's comments today has not made my day!! With apologies to the wonderful Ron of course who is just the messenger!!

Don't get me wrong Fiddle -- I may have been confusing in my post -- I am disappointed it was canceled too! I was looking really forward to the second season.

I think the Ray Romano character was literally perfect. I was +1ing on Keith's rejection of the mob story, that's all. (Oh, and I did not like the whole accidental homicide subplot, either.)

My father (he worked in business affairs at Columbia, Arista, Atlantic and WEA) says that for small record companies in the 1970s a lot of the show rings true.

And even though it was set in the US as opposed to Australia there are many cultural and other similarities from the era. It ignited a lot of nostalgia for me - the early 70s and using the weekly lawn mowing money to go down to the record store and buy whatever was the latest single! But crucially, my strongest drug at the time was aspirin!!

It's being replaced by "CD", but you have to buy all new content and a new cable box, only to find out it's not nearly as good as Vinyl.;)

Keith,
I agree 100%. I wanted sex, drugs and rock and roll. When they murdered Dice, I was done. I literally press stop on the DVR and deleted the series.

What a waste of a good cast.
