I heard my first 200k vinyl system today

That dunce ca p porn movie I have not seen as yet. But I will keep looking for it.

A little about me will answer some questions.
First off I already have digital media use it on a daily basis . Or at least for now.

I have two speaker rigs and a few headphones and CIEM,S.
I listen to a wide variety of genre .
I do this on trains , while running , at home or office.
Analog is a new idea I have , and as with all things audio it's a learning curve .
As with digital I have a msb stack with all the bells and whistles . So is the analog everyone talks about better and if so how.
That is what this adventure is about. And if it is better then the TT and cartridge with phono amp begins .

I hope this helps people help me.

Al,

You will undoubtedly receive many excellent equipment and software recommendations from analog enthusiasts (of which I consider myself one).

But, my advice is to be satisfied with what you own (which sounds wonderful). I think you will spend a lot of time, energy and money and ultimately not be happy with analog. Certainly worth visiting Myles to hear what a well set up analog system can do. However, based on the information you have provided, I suspect you will be happier staying all digital.

Good luck!

I am totally bal all around. And will spend the money to get what I want. As most hear say a good preamp elevates all systems. It's funny though if you go the msb site they state less is more and advocate no preamp. Yet others here clearly say get a preamp. The stack I have had two analog inputs both bal and SE . with vol control. The level of opinions that radically change direction in this hobby is amazing . But me hearing and being given an opportunity of a person highly regarded like Myles and mr koe of genesis is truly priceless. And of the all the others who I do not know offering as well .
So my journey should be smooth sailing. I am hopefully going to be delighted with yet more great sounds to enjoy.
One last thing. As with my other hobbies , RC helicopters and cars the details are all in the setup. And if I can the helicopters spinning at upwards of 2000 rpm I think I can handle 33 or 45 just fine given good instructions.

A Technics 1200 with a Grado Gold can do that... That leaves a nice sum for the preamp. If you run the cable balanced (i.e. have a balanced input on the phono section) then you don't have to spend a lot on the cable. A proper balanced setup has good immunity from cable artifacts- that is what the system is for. Phono cartridges are a naturally balanced source.

Modest A vs Modest D, the 1200 might do that. To be at par with or better a full on MSB stack. The Analog front ends had better be bigger guns with better ordinance. :)

The MSB is nice stuff- used it at a recent show (the 3-piece setup).

We had a fairly modest turntable that year that I did not like but it beat the MSB with ease. I used a recording that I had made as reference and had both LP and CD on hand. That weird George guy that was all about absolute phase came into our room and had us play the two as comparison. He insisted that the LP beat the CD because of absolute phase- that normally if the phase was right there was no way that could happen. I had to explain to him that we had a phase switch on the preamp, which we then demonstrated the whole nonsense again. Folks, I'm hear to tell you that neither digital or analog is better or worse due to phase... I felt both good and bad that he left embarrassed.

I'd love to get my hands on your CDs and LPs Ralph. If you could PM me a link of titles and where I could buy them, I'd appreciate it.

There is not a doubt in my mind that for an investment of something like 10K one can get a superbly sounding analogue front-end. Do your due diligence and try to check out as much as you can, and then make that jump. I also strongly encourage you to take Myles up on his offer. Not only will you hear a wonderful front-end, have the opportunity to listen to some great pressings, you can ask him whatever questions about the format you have. Be sure to bring a gift for his cats, though!;)!

As for Myles I am taking advantage Ina nice and respectful manner of the opportunity .
My msb is the new plus and UMT plus. Two separate PSU,s . Diamond and dual transport. The point is it sounds really good.

But many say there is better. So I purely want to hear it. And a forum like this can make the event happen in epic proportions . And GARY l koh who would not acknowledge what and who you are in this . And the fact take your time to,post and advise makes you special in my eyes.

Ok so I will explain , I know regardless of your additude I am confusing to follow it just happens. The system I did hear for no more than about 20 mins one side was about 200 k in total. Focal utopia 111 90k. A full rack of amps , preamp and dac from Macintosh . Rack and interconnects. Maybe I am off but not that far off in price. The turntable was cheap compared to the rest. About 5 k . So how this becomes a 5 k system I am not sure , but I do admit 5 k is not much for TT and cart. But it's still 5k. It's not junk either. Other than the years way back of smoking in my room playing records , I have no modern knowledge of how this analog concept has improved. I am 57 so maybe I am older than you . Atleast I hope so based on your childish response to a hand being held out in asking. There is no plan other than a good education in analog verses digital.
That's the plan. I feel I have a good enough ear to know what I like and expect from audio reproduction. Not saying I am a grand wizard Pooba.
So feel free to ask me questions so you too can help a fellow audio head in this hobby.

And to rest that have thanks.

Al

Al-The system doesn't become a $5k system. It's a $195k system that happens to have a $5k phono source in it. When you titled the thread "I heard my first $200k vinyl system today" I think I wasn't the only one that thought you heard one of the super tables like the AF1 or a Clearaudio Statement or one of the Basis bad boy tables. I know I sure wasn't expecting a $5k table. I hope that is clear now. And no, you are a year younger than me so I'm guilty of whatever that makes me.

Al, I sincerely wish you the best on your quest to find out what your interpretation of the truth is with regards to analog vs. digital. I am glad you are making a visit to Myles' place so you can check out his rig. Myles has the latest and greatest DD VPI table and he has killer cartridges and a killer phono stage. This will give you an idea of what you can expect from vinyl reproduction. Johnny mentioned bringing a gift for Myles' cats which is probably a good idea. I hear that Myles' cats can sniff out a digital lover and go into full attack mode if an offering to them isn't made.

Funny. I have three cats and 6 dogs at present. And I am younger wow I did not see that coming hahaha . Anyway thanks
And I do look forward to being shown just what top tier analog is.

So we have something in common besides audio. I have three cats and four dogs.

Myles will certainly be playing great stuff so take advantage by snapping photos of the jackets…….then post them here so we can go all piranha on those titles we don't have yet on ebay. LOL!

How many rescues and how many pure breed.?
We have two show and 4 rescues also one more rescue in my home in NC

I've already bought every one of the albums that Myles played for me when I visited him last week. They were already waiting for my by the time I got back to the office. Tomorrow, I'll take pictures and post them here. To compare me to Myles - I'm not worthy.

All that power lifting and kettle belling hides the fact that Myles has many, many years of a headstart on us on everything :p

Regarding price of TT and cartridge . If I use the DAC. Analogy the price matters very much. Compare a 5 k DAC . To a 40 DAC. the improvement is astounding and well worth it if one can afford. Now is it that much better in the analog domain too. I'm sure it is and another reason to check this analog out . I know it's difficult to conceive the why when I Have digital at a high level already why this . It's not about spending more money . It's about getting a higher education in a particular sub field in the audio field . I was at one time not a fan of sounds of the interconnects we use , weather USB or analog. I am willing to bet we agree that there is changes in sound with different ones . I as just playing a couple of dacs I had and my offramp
And needed a. AES interconnect so I grabbed about 5 different ones to try. Only one was for digital the others were analog interconnects. It came down to 2 one analog and one digital . The digital one beat the analog , but the point is still made it mattered. As a group we can all try many methods that anyone one of us can. So in masses comes far more diversity then singular can achieve. Of course now comes the obvious points of who is correct and who is the wrong. I am fine with wrong for me As a start . In this way I can only improve along the way. Being able to hear better audio is a learned experience for me, as I was not born with golden ears of any kind. But I have always had audio above the simple radio all my life . Only the past 30 years do I feel I know more than the first 20 or so. Myles was kind yesterday and confirmed a time to meet
So I am very happy . I equate this to buying a new sports care and having Mario Andretti test drive it with me like the commercial on tv.
How cool is that .......

All of the cats are strays that showed up at our door. I have a purebred Walker Coon Hound that was a rescue dog and she is now around 14. I have a beagle mutt that someone abandoned on the highway and we stopped and picked him up and took him home. Shortly after we got him home I figured out why he was out on the highway. He's hell on wheels. I have a purebred boxer that I actually paid money for. My fourth dog came from someone my wife works with who decided they really didn't want a dog. That dog is one of those weird breeds of a Yorkie and a Poodle. I think they call it a Yorkipoo.

And the new one is a chawower
He is hell. And the Manchester snuck name is the tune

Myles is a fountain of knowledge of music in general and LPs in particular. If Myles tells me that I need to buy a certain LP, I buy it. All of his recommendations have been great.
