I have a berkeley dac reference and I use a pre-amp with it..The max volume it goes is 60 db and I always leave it at 56 or 57 db.. At max levels it becomes brighter sounding.
Hi Capri,
Which Lampi (if any) did you go for and if so, what do you think?

Has anyone yet had a chance to compare the KT77s vs. TS 5881s?
Asking for a friend. :)

Yes. I have had the TS in my dac for two weeks. I really like them. The tone is the most natural and musical I have heard with the TRP. Definitely mellower than the KT77s. The KT77s have a much more exciting sound, more extended highs, more dynamic. However, even though I think the KT77s sound great, I now find them a bit fatiguing after a long listen.

I have the EH back in right now. They are also pretty great.

I think the dac is great and most decent tubes will sound pretty good.

I did and I have two pairs of them. One pair is new production and one pair of nos.
Both pairs are tugsol brand.
The kt 77 I have a few pairs as well mostly nos.
Before I comment I would like say something about my self and my system.
I enjoy music at a fair volume level. I’m not a quite level type person. My place is built for the purpose and a fair size. I can listen from my couch at 8 feet to 27 feet back.
My setup is listed below.
My type of sound is very Visceral. Meaning not a rolled off or calming. Now this does not mean it’s harsh and can’t play soft when it’s correct to. It means my setup can do just about all of what music is and it does this in a non compressed sound or stained sound at loud levels. It allows all there is with its ambience and leading and note decay.

Now having said this I over all feel the 5881 is a Calming less dynamic tube. It’s not as fast as the Kt77. the body of the 5881 is on par with the kt77.
The ambiance is a bit less. The tone is good top to bottom. The demential detail is less so it’s less staging in depth and pinpoint staging. my over all view for this tube is a good tone and relaxing sound. It does give an overall good presentation.

Some time soon I am going to do a detail of all my 18 pairs of tubes for this dac. Also we must consider the recti we use
And this effects the ambiance and stage and most of all the 3 d effect. over all look at a rectifier as the location of your seat at the venue. More on recti when I post all the tubes

Thanks Al for the detailed comparison. I do believe im an outlier here as not only is all of my critical listening done via headphones, but im also a devout hard rock and metal head.
My headphones of choice are the ZMF Verite closed. They are quite simply put the best ive heard to date. Being made with wooden cups, there tends to be more decay than other headphones,so I like to offset this by using a fast, dynamic sounding tube roll in both the TRP and my OTL.

Based upon your comments and others made here,I think im going to stick with the KT77s.

Thanks again.

Just a quick heads up to those looking to beat the cabin fever.

We have 3 of these in stock domestically in single ended configuration ready to ship immediately. 2 with black face plates and 1 with silver.

Al already posted some findings about the above mentioned PSvane tube but let me share with the community finding of a friend of mine Fabio who is i might say one of the biggest tube rollers (has all possible output and rectifier tubes mentioned here and above) and with biggest experience in tube combos for TRP that i know.
So here it goes:
“To all the TRP enthusiast: I have been burning in the PSVane 6CA7-TII the last few days and thought it would be a good moment to provide an update here.

This tube to me is the new reference in the TRP. It has all the presence, weight, power and midrange magic of a good EL34 but is more linear with better treble and bass extension. While the first few hours the treble sometimes was still a bit glassy and the bass a bit loose at times it has now come together nicely. The clarity is state of the art. The soundstage with this tube is incredible and the best I‘ve heard so far. When comparing to the Genalex KT77 even the latter seems a little compressed in comparison. This is a perfect allrounder and combines some of the stand-out elements of the best tubes.
I‘ve tried it with the Taka 274B, the KR5U4G and the PSVane ACME rectifier. While all are good, so far I prefer it with the Taka and then the Kron and third the PSVane.

I’ve first tried it on my headphone setup and then together with Chris, we heard it in my setup on the Boenickes and then in his setup upstairs with the Universums. Results are consistent. This tube is incredibly good and should make it into everybody’s TRP tube collection.

As always, my experience, my preferences and my ears.”
As @christoph received this exact type of tube i guess he might add some more light as well as @Alrainbow who i would say has the same experience as Fabio...
PS seems like it takes quite a while to burn it in..+30h for consistent results

Enjoy some good music guys in this above all difficult times and stay safe.

Cheers,
G

Golum, What about in relation to the GEC KT66 (which I'm using)? I thought that was your TRP reference. I tried a pair of NOS Mullard EL34's awhile back and found them not that close to the KT66.

I'm in the process of comparing the very different RK5U4G and Psvane WE274B replica, but am holding off final judgment for my Supratek Chardonnay preamp arriving later this week.

Gene hi! I honestly don’t know, as this comparison and finding was done by Fabio followed by Al and Chris. I don’t have TRP at hand anymore, so can’t help much.
Pls let me know how it goes with preamp.

Cheers,
G

Hi Golum, Thanks for sharing this info! I recently was looking at the Psvane 6CA7 offerings on the Grant Fidelity Canada website but couldn’t decide on which ones to try. They have 5 different options. Guess this will help my decision making. Currently, most of my listening is with the Gold Lion KT77 and their KT66. I have both the Acme 274b and KR5U4G RK as my rectifiers now. Cheers!

The prices seem to be reasonable, however as my listening habits consist of 18 hours per day, every day I have already gone through one rectifier tube in a little over six months of use. I cant afford nor rationalize buying one of the high end rectifiers, especially when I will burn it up in short order. What other moderately priced rectifier do yall reckon will sound good with these tubes?

Im currently using my 2nd potato masher w/ the KT77s.

Al for example loves Shuguang GZ480...I don't know the price (it is less then other super expensive ones) but fore sure it's more than masher..

Wow! That’s a lot of listening man. I guess you should just stock up on potato mashers before their price starts rising. :) I’m interested in responses to this. I run my trp about 10 to12 hours per day. Would hate to have to replace my recti’s every year.
