Lampizator Valve / Tube Rolling Review Thread

Which rectifiers do you think match well and which move the sound towards lush?

No idea. Just try your most lush recti or add lushness elsewhere, like cable or amp or something

Anybody have any idea how many hours an KR 242 lasts? Or an RK KR 242?
According to Lukasz Fikus:
If you don't drop them on the hard wood floor, they will outlive you :D

Lampi does not run valves the way amplifiers or pre amps do, so all these will last forever.. Many years
I think this is a bit of a myth.

The filaments are run on spec and these can go at any time, really. It's a question of pot luck more than anything else, though some manufacturers filament material will be better than others.

In my experience the cause of all out failure is usually this, not death from slowly lowering emission.

For those using 242s in the Pacific without a volume control do you have your gain set to low or high?

What's the point of driving F1 car if the throttle is not pushed 100%

LOL. I was wondering if playing at low gain which would allow my preamp to be turned up some would be beneficial.

Give it a try at least

Joke aside - very well might be the case.

My plan is to try it once the 242s are broken in a bit more.

One does have to acknowledge a number of life problems that have plagued Kron tubes. I've had 4 RK 300B's die on me, and one RK 5u4g, all with well less than one year of use. Now, Lampi did graciously replace them on warranty, but it leaves me uneasy about the robustness of all of the Kron tubes (of which I have several now). I'd say my batting average is ~60% dying too soon!

Oh, yeah, also a PX-25 DOA......well, I got about 30 hours on it before it expired, so, pretty much "infant mortality".

All filament issue related I suspect.

The longest lasting most reliable tubes I have come across are thoriated tungsten filament NOS 211.

Not good in Lampis, obviously, but smaller thoriated tubes are available that could potentially be used in future Lampis.

I think Lampizator should consider devoting a switch position to the breed.

We are talking different things. One is how long do they last due to the burn in the Lampi, the other is how long do they last due to the fact that the tube can be defective. If the tube is bad, it will die pretty fast, so if it has lived a while you will be fine. the dac itself is gentle on it.

Yeah, somewhat different, but the Kron tubes seem to carry much higher risks of going bad than I have experienced with a whole lot of other tubes over 30 years of "tubing". Other than the 30 hour life on that PX-25, my other ones died after ~ 1,000 hours - - very disappointing for such premium and expensive tubes. I think this is relevant in evaluating the RK 242's (of which I have a pair that have lasted about 200 hours - - just not working in my system now).

Thanks, good to know

This is NOT my experience with KR tubes.
I and a lot of friends of mine have a BIG LOT of KR tubes and not one single defect so far.

I heard that the early RK 300Bs had some problems but after this exact type is not my favorite KR type, I haven't followed up if newer versions are less prone to defects now.
My favorite KR tubes are PX25 (RK and globe) and 242 (RK and regular) and 5u4g (RK and anniversary) and none failed on me

Mine is 45 EML Globe even though we are talking RK

Generic tube question.

Is the KR 242 tube the same as the WE 242A or 242C or are they all different tubes (electrically). I can’t find the answer by searching for tube data on these tubes.

They look way different - 10v, 3.2amp for the WE242s

WE 242c is a substitute for 211.

KR 242 is a replica of telefunken 242. It was first done for Allnic, because Allnic was using it in their top of the line DHT phono (5000, now the 8000)
