Lampizator Valve / Tube Rolling Review Thread

OK bought them now so I can spill the beans.

Tesla AD1. Tesla made some excellent valves. Including the best KT88 I have ever heard/owned and great ECC803S,E88CC and PCC88 all of which have owned or do now.

So I have a lot of faith the Tesla AD1 will be better than the EML AD1.

I do know it uses an 8 Watt heater which is somewhat different to the Telefunken AD1.

But better than your holy Grail EML AD1?
How can that probably be even possible?:p;)

I dunno but at the moment with my current setup the blinking age old Tung Sol 6A3 is killer with 211s on the MRT and Luxman in bass. However, just the Lux and it is EML 45 GM.

Everything keeps changing and the current preferred Lampi setup with it.

EML AD1 is brilliant still but it has microphony issues. So it can't be that brilliant.:D;)

I'm a Lampi newbie. Please tell me what the direct replacement tubes are for the 242 KR tubes that came with my GG2.

I'm particularly interested in these options: Do they work?

Thanks

Marty options are: 300b, 101d, 45, PX25, 242, T100 (with adapter) on 300b setting, PX4, as seen above AD1...for rest i would not say so especially not those which you mentioned.
Maybe someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

Cheers

No they don't. Just invite Al over to roll different ones

I will stay away from the 300b they are boring.

Apart from the 242 and PX25 that you have, the RK PX25, and the EML 45 globe anniversary are worth trying, both solid plate and mesh plate, the latter made as the lampizator special 45.

You can try the 101d psvane it is cheap and usually not as good but in Audioquattr's place sounds better than the 242 (which sounds very good at his). This is a rare occurrence

300b xl is not like other 300bs.

I have compared all 300bs including the XLS at audioquattr's. I preferred elrog the best. Never heard the XLS in the Lampi though I have heard the others in Lampi and they are boring.

These guys will recommend KR and EML and not much else. No bad thing but I think it's great to get away from from time to time.

I would consider NOS:

Sylvania or Tung Sol 6A3.
Marconi PX4 with adaptors.
Osram/Marconi PX25.with adaptors.
Philips F410 with adaptors.
Telefunken AD1 or EB III/Tesla AD1/Philips 4683 with adaptors.

None of these will sound like KR or EML house sound, which is detectable.

If you'd like a lot of respect from me, track down the Telefunken EB III on eBay at the moment. But they are NOT cheap;)

In my Big 7 the Tak 300Bs were much nicer sounding than the Elrogs.

The Taks have a fattened dense midrange and forward stage that I find on every recording. The elrog are more transparent. These are the new, not the old elrog

That's not been my experience at all. The Elrogs lack detail and sound totally flat.

That's very different. Of the 300b they were the most detailed, and lot of concert hall ambience. They had more side ways and mid hall ambience rather than forward

I tried in GG and amps, not big 7. Lack of details and flat sometimes happens with the combination of Lampi and valve not matching preamp, if it sounds dull and flat

I don't think one can make general statements about the sound of tubes. They vary in every circuit. I have seen this through the years with so many different preamp, rectifier and power tubes.

Elrogs were a big flop on Goran's Pac and they were good on the GG2, so it depends.

Can’t agree more on this. As Norman just said Elrog in GG1 crap in GG2 great (but not better than PX25/242) in Pac again total crap all together with Elrog 274b...dead flat boring

I have Dueland and Jupiter output cap options. The difference between those can be enough to prefer one valve over another but it is pretty marginal.

As Ked says, though, preamp is the most critical bit downchain particularly if it doesn't like the high output of, say, 242.

Same here, I prefer the Taka 300b over the Elrogs 300b (old and new) in my Lampi DACs.
But the Taka 300b imho only really shines in combination with the stablemate Taka 274b recti

But the Taka recti is the real Star of that trio :D

The Taka recti makes most Output tubes shine and not only DHTs, also in the TRP with in Triode mode wired pentodes, the Taka recti Excels
