Lampizator Valve / Tube Rolling Review Thread

You have the GG2 with the 5 Position Rotary Switch, right?
Then the 101d is the correct Setting, according to LF.

Does this picture mean that I should be using the 101D setting on my Big 7 MKII for PX25s? I thought people were using the 300B with them.

The Big 7 only has 2 positions. Maybe that's why the high heater setting is ok for the PX25s.

When I had my GG1.9, I used the high voltage position for the PX25.

IIrc on my GG the high voltage position was 101d/300b and the low voltage position was 45/242/PX4.

What I am very certain is that I used the low voltage position for the 242 and the high voltage for the PX25 because I mostly only changed between those two tubes (242 and PX25).

I have the rotary switch. The tubes glow brighter, when I put it to the 300b setting. It won’t damage them?

On the GG1.9 with the two position switch, I used the high voltage (300b) setting for the PX25.
On the Pacific with the 5 position rotary switch, I use the 101d position for the PX25.

The 2 position switch on many GG are configured accordingly for 242 (position one) and PX25 (with 101D - in position two).

242 has 4.0-4.5V filament voltage and approx. 0.65A filament current.
PX25 has 4V filament voltage, but approx. 1.8-2.0A filament current.

Can a 6A3 be used in a Big 7 / GG without an adapter?

Yeah it is UX4 base. No issues

I have been using Tung-Sol 6A3 for years. A real KR/EML house sound antidote. Quite different to either.

Just tested mine and they are quite healthy. Not brilliant but pretty good.

Thanks. I wasn't sure since it is a 6 volt tube.

I decided to pull the PX25s out and re-listen to my WE 275As. It has been a while since I had them in.

The comparison to the PX25s is interesting. The 275As are a big lighter in the bass and there is a little congestion in the mids but overall I feel it has a more organic, natural sound. The PX25s are very detailed and the bass is unbeatable but sometimes they are a tad too much “in your face.”

PX25 and PX4 have slightly rough.mid range. It makes for an exciting sound. But if you want a much smoother mid range experience then there's nothing I have heard that beats EML 45 Globe Mesh.

EML 45 may not have the best bass but that depends on your preamp. I have a tube and solid state preamp, and with the solid state Luxman for some reason 45 GM has very acceptable bass. I was seriously surprised when I got the Luxman how well 45 GM gets on with it.

Put it on high heater. It's fine. Compared to KR and EML tubes the Tung Sol 6A3 doesn't sound anywhere near as 'hi-fi' or high performance if you like. But it has great tone and is fab for rock I think.

The mid range with the PX25 is definitely “exciting!”

The mid with the WE 275A is calm as compared to the PX25.

What a joy to be able to get all these different sounds.

I am listening to it now. Once it is warmed up I will roll through my playlist.

Guys maybe a nice/usable link:

I was thinking about VT25/10y with thoriated tungsten but seems like it won’t fly...

The mids with the 6A3 are very nice. Plus, there is no lack of bass. I am pleasantly surprised how much I am enjoying these.

Which ones do you have?

@Golum. Sylvania VT-52 just doesn't work well in my DAC after it was changed to use 5U4G with the active triode doobery. I used to listen to it a lot with 6X5. There was nothing about it I could ever say was really good it was just easy to listen to. That counts for a lot.

They are a pair of Sylvania 6A3s. I can post a picture if you want.

I also have a pair of Sylvania 6B4Gs and the appropriate adapter.

I don't know how similar they will be to the Tung Sol but yeah I get plenty of good bass with 6A3. Its quite spacious in terms of sound stage and definitely easier on the ear mid range than KR house sound.

The pair I have have identical output. The only pair of triodes I have that measure the same for each valve.

That's exactly how I would describe them. And I agree they are perfect for rock.

I am mostly and analog guy (reels and LPs) so this sound is right up my alley.

In my PAC I use PX25 in 101D heater position, conforming to Lukasz recommendation.
Never tried 300 B position with PX 25 though .
If I remember well in my heavily modded B7 I used PX 4 in 300 B heater position. 242 valve had too much gain in my setup with B7 , swapped then to PX 4.
Never tried 242 with PAC.

What mods did you have on your B7?

The main was R2R engin, then reduction of gain for PCM , Duelund Cast Pio capacitors, I had also black acrylic top plate and acrylic sides , finally the newest Amanero board, but it was already 2-3 years ago. It’s possible that some options are standard now.
