LG W7 Model OLED ? Thin, Beautiful, 2017, Ultra High Definition Picture, Latest and Best Technologies (HDR, Dolby Vision, ...all that UHD Jazz)
...Forget 3D, this is 4D Picture without any glasses, directly between your wall and your eyes.

This is not scary, this is image evolution, with LG UHD (4K) OLED in 2017 (W7 Series)

So, who's going to buy one? :b
______

Sony XBR Z9D Master LED Series is also among the Best, and brighter too, which is needed for HDR-10

We have two LG 4K OLEDs. One 55" and one 65".

Their blacks are the best I have ever seen. The problem is, and it just might be me, but I find the picture to be on the dark or muted side which people say they like for movies. The [my] problem is I happen to like blindingly bright pictures and the LG doesn't have that.

Gary, the Sony XBR Z9D Master Series are brighter, even compared to the new LG OLED W7 Series. And that new W7 is brighter than last year 6's Series.

Some people of your caliber also prefer a brighter picture; it is essential with 4K HDR, or it would be too dim, too dark...I agree.
The other big issue with OLED is motion blur. ...And image retention.

TVs are like loudspeakers; not all eyes and ears see/hear with the same preference.
Compromises aren't free either; they always exist...even in reality. ;-)

I absolutely love my 2016 B series OLED - it is truly stunning.

I like the idea of a tethered box (Sharp did this 15 years ago), but wish this new one was smaller without soundbar - real HTs aren't using speakers anyways.

The four 2016 LG OLED 4K model TVs, with the top three supporting 3D. ...Now extinct completely from the 2017 models.
I like the video above; the guy is very articulate and to the point.

Why would anyone buying a OLED buy a LG when Sony now have OLED models?

I'm not sure if I understand your question well.

I'll give it a shot: Because the LG OLED TV is an overall better TV than the Sony OLED TV.
Because Sony gear breaks a week after warranty has run out. I will never buy Sony again !

Umm. I don't think so. Sony has far superior video processing and motion than LG.

I like it; we have something more interesting to talk about.
We provide some links, we have extended readings, and some past experience to go with it as a customers with great awareness in this TV manufacturing/business world.

It is true that some Sony TV models are considered as the best of the best. But I did not know that they were of the OLED's flavor, I thought they were of the LCD LED variety (Z9D).
http://www.sony.com/electronics/televisions/xbr-z9d-series

It is also true that the new LG OLED W7 ("James Bond" series) is another top contender to the crown (best).
http://www.lg.com/ca_en/tvs/lg-OLED65W7P

I did not read much about Sony's OLED TVs. It's a good beginning for everything.
http://www.sony.com/electronics/televisions/a1e-series

It's true that Sony's video processors (some) are considered among the best.
It's also true that Sony's reputation is mediocre when it comes to customer support facing manufacturing deficiencies in their TVs. ...There's no doubt about that.

In the year 2017 we simply don't have enough experience to know how long a Sony and a LG OLED will last before they start developing nightmares, we just don't know.
...Not in the brand new 2017 TV models. We only have past history as our guide, from both those two companies.

Lagonda's comment just above (quote #4) is very very important to me, no matter how beautiful the picture looks.

When I first mentioned "overall" from that second quote above; it included everything relating to the best of the best today, including reliability, trust, price value, ...all.
And I am certainly not the best judge to evaluate the best picture on all performance's parameters. Fast Motion Blur (fps) is one thing, Color accuracy another, Sharpness, Brightness, Contrast, Naturalness?, Fatigue?, ...all things for all different sensitivities from all different eyes in all different people's eye sockets.
It takes a professional TV examiner/specialist with all the best tools of the trade to accomplish all the measurements and viewing comparisons.
And then it takes another calibrated video professional to form a slightly different overall view depending of the priorities given in each level of picture quality performance.
Plus, over time it's very important to know the reliability of those TVs under test...picture performance wise and parts deterioration.

For my valuable money and brain I would go with Consumer Reports' own recommendation. They came a long way ...

I could post reviews of both LG OLED TVs and Sony OLED and LED TVs manufactured in 2016-2017 (lots of them), but I won't (it would take too long, it's best to let other with a deeper passion to explore deeper on their own...I think). :b
_______

That's why I wasn't sure exactly by what you clearly meant from your question XV-1 (quote #1 above).
I enjoyed reading the link you provided, thank you.

The more we see, the more we hear, the more we read the more material we have @ our disposition to evaluate and learn to the next higher plateau of knowledge in each category of our galaxy. The best is yet to come; we'll plant a man on Mars and we'll send a human expedition into a black hole of the vast space around the universe. We'll be able to watch it all as it happens live on our OLED TV screens, if we're still alive by then. :b

I guess there must be something wrong with my Sony. Still going strong long after the warranty has run out :)

In Australia, LG has a .ot more returns and warranty issues than Sony. Lets face it, all tv manufacturers could so better.

Maybe I am just a unlucky man. Had a first Generation 40 inch plasma (10k back then) burn in shadows.
SCD-1 sacd player dead drive unit, and a G90u projector (45k) that I had sold to a friend when it developed all kinds of problems, he really like me after that !

I didn't know that the Sony A1E Series has been out already for that long...in Australia.
In North America I believe she's still relatively new, like this year, this Spring...or only from last month. I just don't know exactly when.
She uses a LG OLED panel.

Just some related videos (Sony and LG):

• The last page of only one of the internet forums (please read it, it is a short page): http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ol...ers-thread-no-price-talk-80.html#post52517721
• The first page (opening thread): http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ol...owners-thread-no-price-talk.html#post51421625

I did not read ? the full thread, only the first and last pages and few posts from some pages between.
On that particular audio/video dealer store (AVS), LG and Sony (and Samsung) are among the best TVs.
Pioneer Kuro, Panasonic plasma, Toshiba, Vizio, Granada, RCA Victor, Philips, Sanyo, Sharp Elite, ...are dinosaurs of the distant past. :b

There are 7.5 billion people on the planet, and roughly 167 audio/video business websites, with their related public forums.
Each one has its own set of biases and personal rules (with a free license to kill,) with their own street gangs and preachers and collaborators and dealers (Sony is present in that thread above), and all that the jazz inside the world with all variations and colors and pros and cons and visitors and investigators and users/abusers, newers, regulars, and audio/video business people and some type of specialists or two and explorers on all things entertaining. :b

I have zero clue on what is the very best TV in the world today...April 25, 2017 ... irrelative of best price, best reliability and best customer support...zero...absolutely zero.

My guess is the OLED LG W7 Series, but it's only nothing more than just a guess; irrelative if I own it or not.
It is impossible to determine stuff like that in the imperfect world we all live in, simply impossible because no two people have the exact 100% set of exact same values and set of eyes with perfect 20/20 vision, plus plus plus all the complexities of fabrication, production, parts selection, time, space, measuring tools and human evaluations.
@ best is a guess based on what we set the video standards @. Sony is well respected in the professional TV monitor world, LG is very popular and experienced with OLED technology.

If God was an audio/video dealer for the best audio/video company of the entire circumference of Earth, he would probably be living underground @ the very centered core of this planet. :b

She looks good though, I like her form/design and approachable magnetism...the Sony A1E OLED TV.
Still, I would go with the LG OLED W7 Series TV. ...Or the Sony Z9D Series.

There's more to learn than we know. /// More to read than what is written. /// More to see than what is presented. :b

* I think in Japan they have 8K TVs in some homes.

This morning, my curiosity was aroused and I spent few more minutes reading about the Sony A1E OLED TV. More pages were added to that thread (link I posted yesterday), so I read them and went back in the thread to read some more. The Sony uses a LG OLED panel, but it has a fantastic video processor according to several comments from owners.
I am much more open now than I was yesterday, and will follow that model in times to come. If it remains solid (I love the design), I might check it out with the closest store that carries it.

Thanks XV-1 to put me on a new invigorating/exciting path.
Competition in OLED is good, even if that panel is still from LG. Sony is the champ in video processing, one of.
And I've read that Panasonic's latest OLED TV too might have something very exciting, because them too are into that technology.
Panasonic also have their own video processing chip, and it's a very good one. It's inside two of their 4K Blu-ray players; the 900 (USA) and the 700 (only in the UK).

The more competition the better for us all. Prices wise, and manufacturer's pursuit of the best they can perfect.
Picture quality performance is top on a TV, and along with it reliability...endurance.

Hi Northstar

You need to realise, Sony do not manufacturer any LCD or OLED screens for any domestic tv's, nor do Panasonic anymore.
In the high end consumer market I believe only Samsung and LG do.

That does mean they make better tv's thou.

...South Korea...both LG and Samsung. Mexico assembled my old Samsung plasma TV.

And of course of all the 2017 OLED 4K TVs, none can do the magic trick...3D. It's ok, it'll be back...@ the end of 2020...just in time for Avatar 2. :b

But yes XV, the Sony A1E sounds like the real deal.
____

I watched La La Land on Blu last night...very sweet film.
There are some great camera compositions, color's representation, decor sets, innovation, overall pleasure for the heart of the spirit, the romance, the magic touch. I bet the 77" Sony A1E would be outstanding to watch La La Land on 4K HDR Blu.

I also like the sound innovation here incorporated in its design.

3D will probably be back once they can sell glasses-less 3D. OLEDs most likely only removed it to get the higher nits values for HDR. I'd rather have 3D, but obviously the industry is hoping to push 4K and HDR/DV.

I'm not sure about the sound innovation. My main problem is it forces the TV to be angled, unless wall mounted.
