Me and my Studers

More than ten years ago I "met" a Studer recorder, an A80 RC. Until then, I had the usual Revox a77, Revox PR99, Tandberg TD20A. This first A80 was a bit mistreated, without VU meters. I kept it for ~ 3 years and sold it after finding an A80 RC MKII with VU Bridge in almost mint condition. By now I was a STUDER addict.
Suddenly, a year and a half ago, a friend "whistles" to me that an A820 is for sale less than a kilometer from my house. I go, I see it, love at first sight and buy it immediately. It was with Serial Remote Control, 2 Dolby 361A units, Original Service Manual with all the delivering Test Protocols, and what is very rare, verniers for azimuth control on the head's block for both REC/Play heads. A miracle.

Charles, there ain't much money in poetry... :(

I have a couple of questions for you, so stand by for an email. :)

Since I am the friend I can say that George owns a brilliant piece of history. It sounds phenomenal and looks like brand new.

Although I own a very well maintained a80R which I love and use every day in my main job (mastering engineer) and since we compared 820 with a80 my opinion is that the a820 has more detail and more space around the sounds. Preferred it to be honest from a80.

Foxbat I am big fan of your channel in YouTube. Only I would like to hear a direct sound instead of camera microphone. But really enjoy your nice collection and information you provide. Keep the good work

It is interesting and not unusual for people to have different reactions to pieces of gear. My impressions of the A8XX series are opposite, but I guess this is what makes this hobby more fun. :) So I am in process of modifying my A820 to direct output. :)
There is no question the A820 is indeed a very special machine, it was a true milestone. But I still love the sound of discrete circuits.

Thank you for your kind words regarding my channel. Speaking of direct sound you are not the only person to express that wish... but at least at this point it is outside of my capability. I would like to develop this but it might be some time, as I am doing it between other things. I do have a camera that will do it, but it lacks other things I like.

Thank you for your answer. Indeed it’s a matter of taste.

We did this test as much accurate possible. Same tape, measured both machines loudness with loud meter. But of course all are subjective. Monitors of George are atc 100 (beautiful mids and highs)

I really like what you do in your channel and if we could have a direct sound we would be able to compare accurately the sound differences of your beautiful machines and taste in music. So far from your machines my favorites are atr 102 and telrfunken in terms of sound

don´t quit your dayjob.... ;)

I „only“ have a Studer A807, but together with all the others (Telefunken M15A, Nagra IVS, ASC 6002….) it makes the best Tapes, honoured all over the world meanwhile.

Tape machines are like layers of slightly dirty glass. One layer does not damage the image too much, but add more of them and you begin to see the results.

How good your machine is can only be determined through comparisons. We all understand that even an early generation copy differs a bit from the original.

On the playback side there is plenty of room for subjectivity, as we all appreciate different aspects of the sound. I, for instance, particularly love air and transparency.

As I only use own recordings, every copy made by me and sold rather cheap is second generation!
There are no hidden master anywhere in the world!

That is very nice, and I already looked at your catalogue... I wish there was some chamber music there.

I just made a new catalogue, 28 pages, with all tapes and some pictures around my doing. Can be send digitally via mail. Requests please send to <studio@tapemusic.eu>

I wish there was some chamber music there.
Sorry, this genre is not really well presented. I only have on real chamber music:

A really talented quntet, listen to the samples!

I listened... I prefer the strings, but will think about it! How much is shipping to US?

To US I offer 10% discount to suport the shipping costs.
Up to 5 kg shipping cost and packaging are 50,-€ (approx. 53 $)

Thank you! What tape are you using and what is that tape's duration?

I recoomend RTM SM900 tape for demanding music!
I just updated the ordering content with that tape.

As this live recording runs approx. 56 minutes, it‘s recorded with 7,5 ips in the standard version. A high end version can be done on two reels with 15 ips.

And today I translated the four page booklet into English: that is indeed very demanding music, it´s wonderful played and it´s quite rare!

It´s all online now, the 15 ips on two tapes SM900 costs 438,-€.

AR, Nak, Studer, ATC ... love it!
