Member Signatures

I think it can be a thin line between a system listing in the signature and a pissing contest
But in all honesty it doesn’t have to be. That becomes the point in many ways. It can be a way of creating a better culture.

If it reflects badly on us then that is as maybe it should be. Better that it reveals us than allows us to hide.

Exactly my point - every one has a different view on what is "natural" since long.

The ML3 can drive the XLF's, as long as I do not ask for warp9, as MiKe L. said. Or the Quad's. It is a great amplifier, simply it is not the type of sound I want now. I also own the M1.2R, that can drive anything and has the same type of sound, although not as exquisite. The tweaks I used in the Lamm system were the supplied SRA stands , Ching Cheng power cables, the ICs you kindly supplied me and Mogami speaker cables. Surely most of the time the source was the DCS Vivaldi. I always suppress the CenterStage footers or the TA network cables when I start evaluating gear. The Daiza's only arrived very recently.

I do not dismiss Peter or other people efforts, I just looked at the technical aspects of them. But nice to confirm that in many cases it is just setup. BTW, I think Steve has an highly tweaked system , YMMV.

So the 1.2r, compared to the ML3, does not increase rise and fall, and drive of a note, more control of the note through its life? It does mot create an ease in comparison?

Wow! I'd never have thought a thread about signatures could cause such a debate! As a manufacturer on here, admittedly we often use ours to get across a specific message and I apologise now for that. I will endeavour to add some of the gear I personally use for home listening - and nope, not all iFi or actually very glam. It's just what we have at home for everyday use. lol.

Personally I like the gear in signatures, I love seeing what others are using and with what.

I am wondering if a listing of specific gear or a description of music interests, room type, hobby intent/goals is more valuable to provide a context about the poster. For example, what if my signature looked like this rather than what you see at the bottom of this post? Context but without brands. Is this more or less helpful?

Music: Large and small scale acoustic on vinyl
Room: dual purpose, 16' X 15' X 7.5', furniture damping, no acoustic treatments
System goals: natural resolution, energy, clarity; optimize set up and simplicity
Gear: sealed cone speakers, Class A SS, vinyl, stock and DIY cables and rack

Sorry I think it's silly not to mention brands. Then we should all have discussions at such generic levels, e.g. What do you guys think about 3 way sealed speakers vs 4 way ported speakers? Which amplifier do you think is the best match for them, a class A, AB, or tube

i recently changed my signature, just to make it easier to read......but it does take up more lines. so it 'looks bigger' which was not my intent. there are a lot of pieces.

not yet sure it fits what i want it to look like, easy enough to change. no hurry just see where it goes......

We do in fact have those discussions. There are whole threads about typologies. There are also plenty of threads about specific brands. I think having a mix is good. I’m just curious about signature specifics. A lot of people don’t seem to have signatures and others are very brand and model specific.

If people are not having signatures, they are either lazy or shy... Similar to people who don't want to post much

Not that it matters but I added my system to my signature on the back of this thread. To be honest I had to check previous posts as I assumed it was already on there. I'm usually more active on AS/CA.

I'm widely in favour of signatures but two thoughts:

A. Many people are lurkers because it's daunting to raise your head above the parapet and that's fine. At the end of the day if newbies and the shyer types don't learn anything we've all failed.

B. We need to be careful to not confuse the bucks spent on a system with the perception/observations of the person posting. Put simply someone may have spent 26k on an Extreme but have feck all idea about music compared to someone who spent 0.6k on a MicroRendu.

Phrased differently, signatures are useful, but if they become an entry point it's self defeating. Especially to a forum that's already a bit too biased towards showing off ones system. In my opinion at least.

Cheers,
Alan

or they have a life......

Pretty funny. Yes, forum chat can take a lot of time. One chooses how he spends his free time, and some certainly have more time than others. I seem to have more learning to do than others here, so I spend time here to learn what I can and use that information to improve the sound of my system. Some things work out, others don't, but the learning is fun.

Lol , so whats the logic here?
People who dont post much are lazy ??
I think its the other way around , they probably have something better to do .

I am referring to people who lurk a lot on the forum but don't post. They do spend a lot of time here but don't share

About time you had a bit of a clearout maybe!

Surely they are not all sitting on your rack (a very big multi-level rack), cabled up (with a million $ worth of cables) and rearing to go? My guess is you use a few items for your usual listening and have the others stored way for occasional ecursions into your system - as we all do. One line for Sources, one like for Amplification and one line for Speakers is surely enough for others to get an idea of your system. Oh, I've just realised - a bit like my signature!

surely.......they are.:)

every item i list is racked, connected, has resonance treatment, most are grounded......and ready to listen to. the only exception is the incoming cartridge (2 weeks?) the Miyajima Infinity mono. the link at the bottom has pictures and it's all there. the cables i list are all in use. i have three multi-level racks on the left side, and my tape decks and another small rack on the right side.

i've had to sell all my reserve gear to keep my wife settled down with a few recent additions......so nothing hidden.

collectively i do have less investment in my cables than maybe some other uber systems; mine are modestly priced, excepting for an incoming phono cable (not yet listed) that will break the bank significantly.

it's taken 25 years to assemble this system and i have no plans for any sort of clear out. i love it.

and i don't even mention or list the most expensive and significant thing.......my room.

Wrt something like system goals, the onus turns on having a common understanding about the words used. You know what you mean by 'natural resolution' but as we've proven across several threads on the word 'natural', others may not share or know that meaning. Words not used may also give information but that's unclear. The approach may add a more subjective element that is less clear and less communicative. Some could go on with many words to describe their goals.

Listing components with brand and model is pretty straightforward. I don't know how important it is to include all the mods, types of tubes used, etc. Listing components under headings such as 'Amplification, Speakers, Sources, etc. is helpful. Half the time I don't know what something is. Acronyms can be less communicative. How important is it to list every different wire in a system?

I like the idea of listing favored music genres. Those tend to be straightforward.

On the other hand . . .

If the name of these listings is Signature, perhaps best to let it be like a real hand-written signature. Written signatures can be cramped, bold, stylish, big, small, illegible, obvious, cryptographic, etc. etc. - one of the few things left that is truly personal. Maybe forum signatures should be left to whatever the person wants to put in them. Maybe what someone does with that provides more context about the poster than anything else that a signature could be.
