Can't comment on the Focal's, I've heard a few of them with various amplification but not with the Statements.
All I can say is with "AA Ribbons", the Statements were extra-ordinary! Forget the price tag, not even considering, that kind of money for amplification in today's "hard to get by world" is a crime!
Leaving aside the price tag, the sound with the AA's was simply stunning! As I mentioned, I've not heard anything since the last decade that matches it so far...
It also required a fairly long warm up time, around a few hours or so. The dealer chappy had already fired up the system in the early afternoon. My demo appointment was at 3:30pm, and he clearly mentioned that the system had been running since 12noon. So that's another factor to consider, as in public electronics shows the conditions are not that great, let alone intimate. Far too many people and far too much noise. It's really silly they set up a stage, it's as if a live band is about to perform. Everyone gets geared to hear a live band performance, hence when the system plays back recorded music..., uh! nothing really live and kicking here...
I think the stage was just a marketing gimmick! They really shouldn't have done that, rather they should focus on dealer's private rooms, which are far more superior to any public shows.
Anyway, what did they have to lose, just 200 grand!
Cheers, RJ
