I admire Klay for his gutsy determination. He remains one of my favorite players in the NBA. Injuries like this take time. The last paragraph of the article says it all

After recovering from torn ACL, Klay Thompson plans to compete in the 2020 Olympics

Klay Thompson’s return date from a torn ACL is up in the air, but the Golden State Warriors shooting guard is planning to return well before July.

Thompson announced on Thursday that he is making himself available for the 2020 Olympic basketball team.

“I would love to play [for] Team USA,” Thompson told The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II. “That is the plan. I would love to be on the Olympic team.”

Thompson was a key player off the bench on the 2016 gold medal team, finishing fifth with 9.9 points per game. However, he shot only 36.4 percent from the field, including 32.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Even though his scoring was uneven in Rio de Janeiro, outside shooting is even more key in international play with a shorter 3-point line and more forms of zone defense allowed.

Thompson joins a growing list of NBA stars throwing their names into the ring for the 2020 games. Just this week, Thompson’s teammate Stephen Curry — who missed the 2016 Olympics because of knee and ankle injuries — and Damian Lillard committed to playing in Tokyo.

The trio of All-NBA guards were on USA Basketball’s initial list of 35 players under consideration for the FIBA World Cup, but none of them ended up playing. Even before tearing his ACL in the NBA Finals, Thompson indicated he was unlikely to play.

With dozens of other stars’ withdrawals, Team USA wound up in a disappointing seventh-place finish, which led to Jerry Colangelo calling out players who didn’t want to play in smaller tournaments. It’s early, but Colangelo should have a much stronger roster next summer.

Will Thompson recover in time for the Olympics?

It’s completely understandable that Thompson would want to compete in a second straight Olympic Games, but it’s an entirely different question if he’ll be able to come back.

The earliest timelines for Thompson peg him for a February return, but that may be a tad aggressive. Look no further than Derrick Rose, who missed the entire 2012-13 season while recovering from the same injury.

There’s not only the concern of when Thompson will be able to play again but whether he will have the same athleticism. Rose never reached his MVP level again after the initial injury and has battled health issues ever since.

This is not to say that Thompson will never be the same, but it’s conceivable it will take time for him to return to form. USA Basketball has a deep roster of guards and shooters to choose from — assuming players don’t drop out again — so they may not even want to roll the dice on Thompson, even if he’s willing.

Not sure whether I agree in playing KD this year after a 9 month rehab. I always worry about reinjury

Could Kevin Durant return from torn Achilles, play for Nets this season? Maybe…

Every case is different, but many players return from a torn Achilles in about nine to 10 months. Kobe Bryant pushed and did it in eight. Other players will take a full year.

If Kevin Durant returned in nine months it would be March, enough time to get in game shape and be ready for the Nets’ playoff run.

There’s a growing sense from teams we could see just that scenario, and Spencer Dinwiddie talked about it with Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

Though Nets GM Sean Marks refused to rule Durant out for the season, the feeling within the league is trending toward him potentially playing this season.

“I know KD is taking the rehab process ultra-serious. He wants to come back as soon as it’s appropriate, and healthy and the right decision for him, and then also subsequently that would also be the right decision for,” said Dinwiddie, who points out that even a slightly-diminished Durant could still be a superstar.

“The beautiful part about this is, the man is 7-foot and one of the best shooters of all time. At worst you get Dirk [Nowitzki], and Dirk was a monster. So we’re ready for him to come back whenever he wants to and whenever he’s ready to do so, and we know that he’s going to be a phenomenal major piece of our roster.”

Durant is an intense competitor who wants to get back on the court. He pushed to get back from a calf injury and play in the NBA Finals only to suffer the Achilles tear. He’s smart enough to be sure he’s all the way back before he steps on the court, if that means he sits out a full season so be it. However, he absolutely could return this season.

If he’s back, the Nets go from interesting team to potential threat to the Bucks and Sixers at the top of the conference. Durant was the best player in the world the past couple of years and he could return to that status quickly, and lift Brooklyn up with him.

I guess the Giannis news won't go away. Now we hear from the owner of the Bucks ........

Bucks’ co-owner: Team wants Giannis Antetokounmpo “for the rest of his basketball career”

Kurt Helin
,
NBC Sports

After the wildest summer ever of NBA player movement and drama fans are lusting for more — which puts MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in the spotlight.

He has two years left on his current contract in Milwaukee and after next season would be eligible for a five-year, $247 million supermax extension, which the Bucks will offer. Will he take it? This is the same contract situation that Anthony Davis was in with the Pelicans one year ago, and AD switched agents then forced his way to Los Angeles. Would Antetokounmpo do the same thing? There are 29 other teams interested in his services (the Warriors come up as one of those very interested teams, although the Bucks aren’t too worried about that one).

The Bucks want to keep him. Not just for his next contract, but for all his contracts. That’s what Milwaukee co-owner Wes Edens told TMZ Sports.

“He’s a special basketball player, obviously, but he’s an even more special person. What you see is what you get. He’s an amazing guy, he’s amazing to the organization, he’s amazing to his family. He’s really an incredible character. Obviously, we want to be a part of his life for the rest of his basketball career.”

Antetokounmpo has said that he wants to stay in Milwaukee for his entire career, although the number of players who said that then bolted a smaller market could fill the Bucks’ new arena.

Two things separate Antetokounmpo’s situation’s from Davis.

First, the Bucks are good. Very good. Title contender good. They built a team around Antetokounmpo and won 60 games last season then made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. They enter the season as the Las Vegas favorites to win the East and they have the third-best odds to win the title. That is a wildly different situation than the Pelicans and Davis a year ago.

Second, and this gets overlooked too much, Milwaukee is Antetokounmpo’s home in America, the only one he’s really known. Milwaukee is where he was drafted and has always lived. It’s the city where he and his family could live together safely (Antetokounmpo grew up in Athens but was a poor, immigrant family that never felt comfortable or safe.) Antetokounmpo has a real bond with Milwaukee, and that matters.

Never say never when it comes to NBA player movement. Anything can happen. However, sources from other teams around the league say of course they are monitoring the Antetokounmpo situation but nobody really expects he’s going to leave. He could join Stephen Curry and James Harden as guys who took the supermax payday and stayed.

What the Bucks should take notice is if Lebron makes any covered mouth talk with the Greek Freak during their match ups. :D

Looks like the league is indeed cracking down but $50K for these owners is "chump change"

NBA fines Bucks for comments about offering 'supermax' to Giannis Antetokounmpo
Official release

NEW YORK -- The NBA announced today that the Milwaukee Bucks have been fined $50,000 for violating league rules governing the timing of discussions regarding future player contracts and permissible commitments to players. The fine is in response to a public statement made recently by General Manager Jon Horst during a televised team even that Giannis Antetokounmpo "will be offered a supermax extension."

Under NBA rules, teams cannot commit to offer a "supermax" extension prior to the summer following a player's seventh season in the NBA.

Kyrie better be careful inasmuch as he "IS" the Brooklyn Nets this year

Nets' Kyrie Irving sustains facial fracture during pickup game

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kyrie Irving is hurt before his Nets career even begins.

Irving sustained a left side facial fracture after being elbowed during a pickup game, and the Nets said Wednesday the All-Star point guard is listed as day to day.

Irving was hurt Tuesday in one of the final workouts before the team opens training camp. The injury came less than an hour before general manager Sean Marks and coach Kenny Atkinson were scheduled to address the media, and Atkinson instead skipped the press conference to accompany Irving for evaluation.

The Nets have media day scheduled for Friday before they open training camp Saturday.

Irving was signed in July after two seasons in Boston. He has had to wear a mask previously during games to protect a facial fracture, including early in the 2017-18 season after he was elbowed by former teammate Aron Baynes.

I don't think I've ever seen Howard be so reasonable and humble. That's a good sign.
Wasn't he resonable as well when he came to the Hornets(?)?
He said all the right things back then as well... :p
