At 1:05 you will see the read option score a touchdown. It requires a mobile QB. One of the commentators cited it as the real reason Smith was benched. The play depends on what the LB does. If the linebacker stays outside to guard against an end run you hand the ball off to the RB. If he commits inside to stop the running back you keep it and run outside.
The 49ers ran that play yeterdat
Have to wonder if such would have been possible with Lawrence Taylor ... One of the few LB s that could control control the Houdini of QBs: Randall Cunningham... Players of LT caliber come every other century so ... He would outrun RB having rushed the QB catching them from behind!!
Anyhow, I believe there is more to the benching of Smith than just the mobility of Kaepernick, the kid has presence, enthusiasm and understanding of the game ...from what I read he has been wowing the coaching staff in practices and there were heavy lobby form the receivers and even coaches, to include him in the game .. especially Randy Moss who's been open quite a number of time and not seeing any balls thrown his way ...
Good pints Frantz. But i brag on RGII every chance Z ge. One of the few bright spots in an otherwise dreaful Redskin expereince.
I have owned only owned two Redskins jersevs ,Sean Taylor and RGIII
P.S. Great linebackers come and go. There will never be another LT. He also played with the greatest front seven of any NFL defense.IMO.
Greg
You have reason to be hopeful. The kid is awesome. The RB (a rookie also I believe) is also noteworthy. With more balance in offense and a defense.. The 'skins will make the NFC East competitive again...
As for great LBs they don't come and go there hasn't been anyone even close to LT before and since. For a few months, not years there was a kid in Buffalo who everyone thought could have been his heir apparent .. never materialized: Cornelius Bennet.. Derrick Thomas was good but mostly a pass rusher ... LT could even cover receivers ... Since he was such disruptive pass rusher you wouldn't waste him on receiver since the receivers would not have too much time to run their routes when LT was already disturbing the whole offense... Do you remember his rookie season? With that god-awful bad Giants defense? he single-handedly made them (the defense) relevant because other teams had to devise their entire offensive game around what to do to LT freeing other defensive players .. Remember he played every down.. the front 7 became relevant once team had to focus on LT ... The best front 7 might likely have been the 85 bears by the way and the Viking's Purple People Eaters not too far behind and let's not forget the 76' Steel Curtain, likely the second greatest defense of all time the # 1 85 Bears .. I am a Giants fan BTW ..
The likes of LT have not yet been seen. A LB with Wide Receiver speed, Defensive Tackle Strength ... and with the stamina and the sure takling abilities of a Safety ... Not yet ...
There is one that comes to mind but he died way too young: Derrick Thomas.
I still don't understand why they traded for Tebow![]()
A great player, even exceptional but no LT .. Interestingly he played with the aforementioned Cornelius Bennett for the Crimson Tides ... The Niners and Giants seem to be on a collision course ... whichever prevail is likely to win the Superbowl against the Patriots (? again !!??) The Pats look scary when their offense is clicking as it has been the past two weeks especially vs the Tebows ...err JetsI still don't understand why they traded for Tebow

I have to disagree with you Frantz. The fact was you basically could not double team LT because of the other front six. That enabled him to run around your left iackle straight to the quaterback. If you tried to chip him with your tight end they would just move him around.
It would be interesting to read Joe Gibbs own comment on LT .. The thing is LT was constantly doubled and even triple teamed .. A Guard alone wasn't going to block LT and the old trick of blocking a blitzing LB with a back never worked with him .. Os they had to do it with usually a guard and the Tight End which then was no longer available as an outlet receiver .. The other were then one on one or with one person free .. he changed the game by his lone self ..
Now back to the schedule discussion ... I wonder how long RG III will last if he goes around tking those kind of hits .. he is not a big guy ... Also let's wait until next year when the league will have watched a lot of his game .. Same happened with Cam Newton .. They know him now.. THey know his tendencies and will try to defend him differently so far he looks good .. very good ..
Now the other rookie QB surprise is Andrew Luck ... Seems the hype was real. he is good.. Better than RG III? I don't know but he's team is better for sure .. They look like play-off contenders right now ...
There seem to be a QB controversy in SF. The coach is now saying he'll make a decision .. I can understand the wavering but I am not sure I know of any Superbowl winner that had this kind of drama in the middle of the season .. Not a good thing .. They should stick to Kaeprnick.
Maybe the secret was doing all that blow!![]()
Hey hey, no hitting below the belt. At first I wrote "low blow" but that also didn't sound right...![]()
