Rockport use wo24x & mw 13tx or 16 in the lyra i don't know exactly. Really good drivers.

@Porsche
That's what many manufacturers claim;), maybe something will be changed according to their specifications.
looking at both drivers on satoris site and rockport, sorry but that is not the same driver

They modified the satori drivers, and call it own design.
But sb acoustics devolped this carbon fibre midrange &woofers.
Do you know how big sb acoustics is they devolped speakers over 40 years.
Rockport must be modified these driver, otherwise the statement "we developed this" would cost them dearly trust me. Scanspeak berylium tweeter they made a new waveguide for this.

perhaps, what im saying is that is not the satori driver in the rockport speakers that you claimed, im not saying satori doesn't design the drivers, what im saying is that is not a satori driver you can buy from madisound or other satori distributors

Textreme/TPCD diaphragms developed by 3rd party and speaker driver manufacturers use them as OEM supplier.
Speaker manufacturers may ask drivers manufacturers like SB, Seas, SS, AT to customize drivers to their needs - it might be different TS parameters, different basket, magnet system, mounting, faceplate with a logo, grilles, sometimes just different look, sometimes it may be totally new design. you can guess three times who oexon, sweden belongs to. I don't always want to seem like a smartass

I think one of the differentiating factors with speaker companies and driver design is that most companies leverage off- the - shelf drivers and tweak them as need be. Few actually design their drivers from scratch and either build them themselves and / or contract out some of the work but not all. I'd put Magico, YG Acoustics and Vivid Audio in the latter and Wilson in the former. Rockport may be in the middle?

This is false. Simply call Rockport and speak directly to John, Josh or Andy. Andy designs Mid and bass drivers from the ground up. Then each part (surrounds, skins, baskets etc) are sourced to their specifications from different manufacturers spread across the globe. These are then assembled into the drivers you see. If you really, really want to know ask them to visit Rockport in Maine and see for yourself so that there will be no need for any further speculation. They are a boutique design firm. Nothing is off the shelf. The Orion tweeter is designed by Andy and is unique as are all of Rockports mids and woofers. The other speakers (non Orion) do indeed have modified Beryllium tweeters.

So you're both right. The mids and woofers are custom, the tweeter is bought and they mod it somewhat. Very few companies design and build their own drivers. YG, Vivid Audio, Boresson, maybe Magico.

I actually didn't want to write anything more about it, but I can't hold back:p
The cone is patented, they cannot have developed them themselves. If they claim that, they will be sued. Do you know what a multi-million dollar company SB Acoustics is, it is probably the largest driver manufacturer in the world. The tweeter is a scanspeak with their new waveguide.

OK let me straighten you out because you know just enough to be dangerous. Rockport was the first company on earth to use spread toe carbon fiber in drivers - BY 10 YEARS! They buy rolls of it from a Swedish company called Oxeon. Oxeon noticed the success of Rockport's drivers and started a company called SB Acoustics.SB Acoustics drivers are still not the same as Rockport's. Rockport uses rohacell as a core and makes a sandwich construction driver which is superior to SB Acoustics technique of layering carbon fiber on itself because it has a superior stiffness/weight ratio Using CAD Andy designs all his drivers. After the cones are made here in the U.S. they ship them to Scanspeak for surrounds and final assembly. The Orion tweeter is unique and was designed by Andy because no 1.25 inch Beryllium existed. He had the 1.25 inch dome custom made and then shipped to Scanspeak for production. Their other tweeters are customized Scanspeak but modifying them and building a wave guide is no trivial task. I'm not picking on you but there is so much misinformation out there about so many things please go to the source before you make statements like you made which are demonstrably false. Any further questions direct to Josh, John or Andy

Just curious if you have a vested interest in Rokport as you seem to be pushing your narrative very hard.

Also, sounds like they design most drivers and tweak some but manufacture none.

SB Acoustics have different story and not connected to Oxeon.

Texreme diaphragms supplied to many speaker manufacturers. SB use it in Satori series
Rohacell is another story. SB use it in CRC series - mid-class of drivers, they sound close to Satori, but not that fine, as Satori have different and more advanced construction.

As it is ipossible to compare face-to-face custom drivers from Orion to stadart SB Satori, there is no answer which one sounds is better, but my experience say that Satori will be same or better. To make objective comparison is not easy, as the driver is a part of speaker and while it have some parameters what may be worse then standart driver but others may be better as it designed to fit specific cabinet voulume, shape, crossover and will match to overall design better then standart what may have more advanced tech and parameters.

Yes, some people may be misleaded if they see textreme structure and may think that that it is SB Acoustics, but the driver may be produced by many other manufacturers.

Textreme is quite good for diaphragms - ligtht as paper and stiff as hard domes/cones, and got a hype and some manufacturers use it's visuality to attract customers. You may find it in Borsessen speakers - the drivers are some alu sandwich, but painted to look like textreme.

Having Textreme diaphragm does not mean that one driver sound better then others from different manufacturers, as a lot depends on final design and tech.

Sometimes manufacturers may claim that they develop something very special and no one can offer that product and no one can compare it to alternatives. Means that manufacturer gains that he is the only one who do it and that it have very unique feature what allows to claim that his final product better then others. That is very good for marketing and increased price.

Mods: would it be better if you create a new topic and move part of thread about drivers/construction there?
