Presidential Debate: The Heck Happened???

What did you guys think of the moderator, Jim Lehrer? I had a high opinion of him but I thought he totally lost control last night and Romney took best advantage of it. I recall previous events having super strict time limits.

I didn't see the debate, but in reading the paper this morning it appears he had no control whatsoever. I wonder if that was an "unexpected" surprise to the Romney camp.

Jim Lehrer didn't do a great job of moderating, but he's not the guy who lost control of that debate, that would be President Obama.

That a viewpoint of the outcome and not a moderator control issue.

A couple things stood out to me ,

1.Obama nervous smile was just such , frankly theres nothing to smile about after 4 disastrous years and worst no vision forward ..

2. All politicians lie , or half lie , so i very rarely watch them speak , unfortunately Obama has his last 4yrs for the other guy to pick apart and attack ...

3. The debate was handily won by Romney or lost by Obama, verified by all political pundits . Domestic and international, frankly i really don't see it getting any better for him in the next two , because unlike 08 when he had no political baggage , the shoe is now on the other foot ..

Regards ,

I hate the format of these things; it reduces the exchanges to 'gotcha' moments and trivializes important issues by turning them into sound bites. Having recently read Jaffa's book about the Lincoln-Douglass debates I wish that the candidates had longer to flesh out their proposals and philosphies i.e. 15-30 minutes with a 10 minute rebuttal. Then again, I'm not sure many modern politicians could speak coherently without a teleprompter for that length of time.

Well i know one for sure who cant ...:)

It made the news down here as well. Have no idea what was going through Obama's head. All I can say is - what a disappointment :(

Romney reminds me of GW Bush in so many ways.

Funny , apart from the complexion how so ...:) Obama in many ways is the one who reminds me of Bushy ....

Things said in the debates can become fodder for ads, too. And even the guy who "wins" can lose if he took positions that are contradictory, made statements that were misleading, etc. Time will tell, but it doesn't look as decided as it did yesterday morning, does it?

Tim

That's a very good point, Tim. Some of the many claims and statements that Romney made could very easily come back and haunt him. It would be a VERY clever tactic, IMHO, if Obama uses these talking points against him in a future debate, or in his ads. Romney put a lot of things on the table last night, I wonder IF Obama was expecting that:confused:

What I saw was a masterful accountant deconstruct the books of a clever politician.

I think Win meant "accountant". Obama looks like he is running on fumes. Always appeared to be out of his depth, but now it really shows.

Tom Lehrer was the moderator?
I wish I'd tuned in!

I couldn't help but feel that Obama didn't have confidence in the numbers his staff gave him. Seemed to me that that was what was keeping him from pressing any sort of offensive.

Not really, that has never stopped him in the past, he does seem to have issues reading from notes and tends to wing it , maybe he will start stuttering like Bushy if he gets a second term, the pressure of the office i suppose ..

Given the lack of substance, complete reversal of positions and...how do I put this kindly...liberal interpretation of the books...I wouldn't call Romney a "masterful accountant" in this context unless I was referring to him cooking his own books, not deconstructing Obama's. YMMV, I suppose, but it will require some serious mental gymnastics. Don't get me wrong, Mitt was good, maybe even masterful. But if so, he was a masterful bridge salesman.

+1 Still Obama was as flat as a Bottle of Soda left uncapped for hours ...

Do you remember the opening shot? President Obama explained Romney's plan and then Romney 100% denied that was his plan. President Obama paused, and then said, "well, you just changed your plan today" or something to that effect and that was that! It was as if he was taught what to say and not prepared at all for anything different from Romney. A masterful debater should have handled that much better and be ready for such twists. What's the usual one? "Sir, on so and so day you said that and now you say this. The American people need to decide if they want a consistent message and not one changes with day of the week!"

For me this was such a shocking event as having watched Romney in previous debates I thought he just came across as a stiff corporate dude. I was not at all prepared for a smiling confident guy that was specific on his points. He followed PR lessons of repeating his messaging but not too many times so it became offensive (although he came a bit close for my comfort).
