This is a thought in progress . . . I'm beginning to think that this video thing is less representative of the in-room sound the worse is the original recording.
I have listened to Bat Out of Hell my whole life -- probably literally hundreds of times. I always felt the recording overall was a tragic hot mess, and "Bat Out of Hell" (video not posted) with all of its layering and sound effects, probably the worst sounding track of all.
I played the tape, and then I played the Qobuz stream. The tape was the best sounding, most transparent, least congealed rendition I have ever heard. The tape did what tape seems to do: separate and pull things apart better, improve transparency and produce punchy drums. Yet through Vimeo both "Bat Out of Hell" and "For Crying Out Loud" still sound pretty bad.
Last night's experience suggests to me that MikeL is correct to be reluctant about posting videos. At least with poor original recordings, I think the videos generate more heat than light.
