SET amp owners thread

Of the more recent systems you've been video'ing...do you have a particular favorite set of speakers? I found the earlier one you compared with Yamamura quite interesting. Although we dont have vinyl, we do have the FIM Winson MA CD remastering of Bruch Scottish Fantasia Oistrakh and recorded it on iphone just for fun.

Never going to be the same as actually being there...so curious as to your favorite of these various speakers you've been hearing. Presume its still the really tall, white 4-speaker with the FLH horns that nearly touch the ceiling?

Lloyd, in my list of favourites there are two single drivers - one was the Yamamura, which is gigantic. The white tall one you are referring to is the Pnoe. Both of those are BLH - backloaded horns - and not FLH (front loaded horns). They have to be run strait jacketed - if you screw up something they can sound awful.

Alongside those I rate 5 dual FLHs - that is a more standard pattern that as long as the designer matches the drivers and crossover well, this seems to work brilliantly, also sounds good with digital, and is so far ahead on rock of any other speaker genre. It can play anything thrown at it. Two of those are Altecs, one is Leif's, one is bespoke drivers and another was a JBL. I plan to hear one more Altec now. They are wide, anything from 1m - 1.5m. Silbatone make one retailing at 200k which is based off the Western Electric Mirrophonic, if someone wants a price ticket.

The above speaker I have been posting since yesterday is also excellent. It is a one off and was installed by Kevin so the owner I visited (Jim) did not have to build it and got it off the shelf. He has done a good job setting up the electronics around it.

interesting he got back to class D on the Altec BLHs
I run Powersoft on FLHs and subhorns from 550 and down
Are you using DSP on the Powersoft Leif ? Can the phase be adjusted in the amp ?

yes and yes
I have slightly more delay on upper FL than lower to focus more like a pinpoint with 4003
Rune at NNNN taught me this trick....they used at Cisco on speach systems to increase clarity

Thanks...actually the white one I was referring to was this one, not the Pnoe...it this Leif's? So far, I have found this one the most intriguing:

There have been 2 systems (Tango plus one other) which also impressed.

Love this thread! I especially enjoy seeing all of the great systems out there. Time to post mine, I thought I had but having just reviewed all of the posts I realized I hadn't.

My speakers are Coherent Audio Neo 18 designed and custom built by Frank Fazzalari in Ontario, Canada. They are a dual concentric design with Radian low mass woofer and compression driver. There is also a super tweeter. A ported design Frank has done some interesting structural work in the interior of the cabinet. These speakers are efficient and easy to drive aided by a well thought out crossover with quality parts and speakers with a fairly smooth impedance curve.

I have two amplifiers available. My primary amp is a Shindo Cortese 300b, a recent edition Model. In the summer I mix in the Decware Zen triode. My preamplifier is a Shindo Monbrison. The Shindo components are unlike most of what I have heard before, let's just say I am a fan.

The sources are a BrinkMann Bardo/Hana Umami for vinyl and an Antipodes S Series/Ayre 20 DAC for streaming.

I was really impressed with the listening spaces that our members have posted including some of the views. I have a dedicated room which just happens to feature a large picture window. Probably not the best thing sonically but it is nice to look outside, lol.
I heard those speakers at a local dealer in Portland OR USA. True Audiophile. I really liked them. They are very reasonably priced for such a nice sounding horn. And they fit in a room without overwhelming it.

I am submitting an offer on a home tomorrow. If I get it, it has a 2 car garage with 10 foot ceilings Inwill convert to a mediq room. I would happily insert a horn of this scale.

Thanks!

I though Lloyd meant this one:

Thank you Leif, those Powersoft seem like a good way to free up all power in my MBL amps to the main towers and add some extra adjustability in the bass region. :)

you could add SETs then.

Pity that MBL ball is very hard to drive.

i heard the 116f are very easy to drive. Maybe get those and a SET so you can be part of both worlds
