SET amp owners thread

What did he think about the Wavac 833?

He didn’t like it as much, said more power but less nuance. Which is what I would expect. Looks like the 50w 211 are optimal for his speaker. There could be other cases where more power is required with the Wavac

I read about the Feastrex Lotus Granada.
Whats intetesting is the use of a fully active digital crossover. I know people with around $100k into vinyl that use a BACCH with ORC as they say they can not hear the digital processing.

If active crossovers are so good today, why do we not embrace them. Sure, no one wants to buy 3 sets of amps. But, the amps could become a much different device that cost far less as gripping power becomes less necessary when your direct coupled to a driver.
I use a digital active crossover in my second setup but for digital only. My attempts to get a satisfactory sound from analog feeding into it were not as successful. I now have an analog active crossover (Accuphase F15L), which is a compromise for the digital (the digital crossover sounded better with two outboard DACs) but much better for the analog. I still haven't found the ideal for it yet but it might be an analog all tube active crossover. Luckily, the drivers I have chosen have well behaved frequency responses and therefore don't require a lot (or any really) correction to sound good.

Thivian labs 211 mono amps no complicated construction, the iron used is beyond reproach. Disadvantage: the thing is heavy like lead. Pair 8.5k€
Heard these at Dynamikks headquarters and thought they sounded pretty mediocre...which to me is still a lot better than any SS amp...

Thank you.

SJS electronics 8w 300b, heard on living voice R80 at definitive audio. Very nice sound for a small speaker. Wish I can listen to SJS PP 300b 20w next.

Also got to compare his two models, one is with GOSS and copper, and in the higher model you can compare with finemet, silver, and generally higher quality parts. Will write in more detail with some videos

Kuzma Stabi R with CAR 40 and consolidated SUT.

Living Voice and Kondo both are my favorite.
Kevin used old kondo gakuon push pull 300b in past for designing Living voice 2way dynamic driver speaker.

No, Wavac 833s don’t sound good even when high power is needed. A friend used to have four piece Wavac 833s and replaced it with Ongaku. I heard Wavac 833s various times. IMHO there is no hope for 833 tube or Wavac amplifiers except the ones with old Tango transformers period.

Looks nice. I see reviews saying a stereo unit is around $8500. No idea the monoblocks.
If I get to a place to try a 211, I will try Apollo Audio. They are local. They can bring it to my house to demo. I can hear units with different grades of components.

It sounds like there are some sort of colorstions happening if a digital ceossover works for digital and active analog for vinyl.

What is the digital crossover.

Of course, I would do it that way too. I can say the Thivian mono amps, very good construction 2 main transformers for anode voltage class A2 1100V dc, one for heating the tubes. choke ,oil caps, transformer coupled input. with that stock tubes not that magic sound that amp can do trust me.

P.S
When you need more power look at 805 tube amps that kicks 211 in the ass.

How much do you have to spend to get a good 211 tube?

~ 800-1000$ a pair GE Nos tubes that psvane in the thivian cost 89$ one tube

Amperex and United are very expensive. I wouldn’t go with Psvane Acme or KR. At the minimum RCA or GE or I just won’t get a 211 unless you need that power on a budget and will never have the urge to upgrade

Ouch. What about 2A3 or others that make 8 watts or more? Are they all multi thousand dollar tube replacememts.

Mini-DSP nano-digi, which is digital in and out. I use two DACs and two amps to drive my two-way DIY horn speaker.

I found the WAVAC HD805 to sound pretty amazing.

Even relatively inexpensive Sovtek 2A3s sound good. A NOS pair of Sylvania 2A3s will cost about $500. GEs a bit less. To get 8 watts you need parallel SET, so two pairs or about $1000. Of course if you want the cream of the crop single plate 2A3s, these are very expensive at over $2000 a pair if you can find them.

GM 70 is an inexpensive tube. For 300b if you stick to WE reissues and Takatsuki or Elrog you are fine, danger is in chasing old WE which really very few people do. 2a3 you will rarely find AVVT, you might find Fivre at 3k but otherwise stick to inexpensive tubes. But they don’t give much power.

There are very low watt tubes which can be inexpensive. But not many speakers those amps can drive.

So to get into sets, like with turntables is fun and good sound but if you are new to it just like you will try different carts and phonos and such, you should embrace the hobby of trying different tubes and topologies and parts.
