TechDas Air Force One

Thank you Jack. I was nursing a throbbing headache due to a late night out the previous evening. That's why I was staying at the farthest chair the whole time. Despite all that, I enjoyed the addition of the AF-1 immensely. It was good to hook up with Philip and Gerry too.

The difference in resolution and overall enjoyability (is that a legit word) was night and day. Congratulations!

Hahahaha. I told you you should have gone home when we did instead of doin' the 5AM thang. We ain't spring chickens no more brother dear! Hahahahaha.

Ken Kessler gives the AF1 the cover and calls it the "best LP spinner in the world" in the June copy of Hifi News.

OK, Jack and Gary, I am convinced. :)

But although this is WBF, not WBE - What's Economics Forum, I can not go over this aspect ... The only possibility I see to gather the funds is using the TechDas Air Force One to pay for it self.

Admitting it could be used to digitize valuable LPs to DCS5.6 using the SOTA ADCs Bruce uses in his work and audiophiles would accept to pay $30 for each transcription around 3500 transcriptions would pay it. This means 10 hours per day during one year, no holidays, in addition to a new stylus and tube set. Any expert around that can carry a SWOT analysis of this proposal? ;)

Does Ken compare the AF1 to any other tables? On the other TechDas impressions thread, there was a comparison between 3 or 4 tables. Could one of the new owners list which tables were replaced by the 5 or 6 new owners of the TechDas? I have only read about the TW AC3 and some Micro Seikis.

If I haven't thanked you enough for the very early heads up on this table, here's one more Gary, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

There is a gentleman in Thailand,Saksiri (Joe) Pasothakang, that I did a mastering for. He had done a vinyl capture with 6 different highend turntables.
That was some awesome music!

Hahahaha. While I would never sell transcriptions due to legal reasons, I do intend to record some of my albums as well as Jim's tapes to DSD for use with the TechDAS D7 DAC and the incoming Light Harmonic DUAL. I'm not going to get a Sonoma and a Meittner ADC since it is only for our personal use only but I am very keen on getting one of those Tascam DSD recorders Bruce posted in another thread. Assuming of course that when he gets his units, he gives them a favorable review. If it is equal in SQ to the Korg U47 uses, I'm buyin'. Better would be gravy.

Took some pics during my visit to Jack's lair last Saturday. A thing of beauty.

What is the foot print of the TechDas ?
Will it fit on a TS-140 ? 19.6 x 23.6 inches ?

since the Tech Das already has an air suspension, i doubt it would be compatable with the TS-140.

it would be like placing a Vibraplane on top of the TS-140, it would compromise both. maybe there would be a net gain but i doubt it. maybe you could neutralize the air legs and allow the TS-140 to do that work.

That was my reaction too! The suspensions could beat against each other.

I have a suspended SME 30/12 on a preloaded Vibraplane. Someone recently suggested the same problem might be occurring in my system ie. the two systems at similar resonant frequencies interacting together to make matters worse, though the sound only improved when I added the Vibraplane. Both the SME suspension and the Vibraplane are heavily damped, so there is no visible oscillation when the surfaces are depressed and I don't know how to measure the respective resonant frequencies. I plan to try locking down the suspension towers on the SME and listening to the result. I did once try placing a Townshend Seismic Sink on top of a Vibraplane to support an unsuspended turntable, and the result was not good. I'll report back.

Me too. The table is over a hundred and fifty pounds and the air suspension is quite damped. In two weeks at least it has remained perfectly level according to the bubble gauge on the plinth. The air bearing likewise isolates the record from any vertical forces. If anything, the table does benefit from lateral vibration damping. In my case that would be the bearing/cup interface between the filter platform and its support structure. I remember Gary saying he could here a thud when tapping the sides given the lack of degree of freedom on that plane. I don't get any sound just as I don't tapping on the LP itself. Tap the shelf sideways hard enough though and it will skip. Thankfully I don't have bass that can move all that mass. LOL.

You're most welcome, Jack. Always happy to share my musical discoveries. I'm really glad that you like it.

That was only because the unit I had at CES had a prototype suspension. I'll check out the one here in Hong Kong (early production) and the one in Malaysia (same batch as Jack's) but I don't think that they will have any problems.

Neither do I :D

I agree. Unless the suspension was designed for one-another (like the special HRS platform designed for TechDAS), two random suspensions stacked on top of each other could be a disaster or, very rarely, synergistic.

I understand that the air suspension can be disabled allowing use of the table on active isolation tables.
