TechDas Air Force One

Ken Kessler gives the AF1 the cover and calls it the "best LP spinner in the world" in the June copy of Hifi News.

I just read the review. According to KK, the AF1 "is the most revealing analogue source I have ever heard bar the best examples of open-reel tape. Period."

I understand that the air suspension can be disabled allowing use of the table on active isolation tables.

Honestly, why would you bother with the awesome AF1.

And after one of our music lovers sold his Halcyonic active platforms for Still point 5's :)

*Ahem* Us Brits--you know, the inventors of the English language--spell it (and similar words with an "ise". What's next, spelling colour without a u?! :)

Well, Bob eeZ French. :D

If you put "eau" at the end of everything, I don't think Bob would be able to tell any more. It's called French Canadian camouflage-eau.

Does Ken compare the AF1 to any other tables? On the other TechDas impressions thread, there was a comparison between 3 or 4 tables. Could one of the new owners list which tables were replaced by the 5 or 6 new owners of the TechDas? I have only read about the TW AC3 and some Micro Seikis.

KK definitely is a fan of the TechDas, and so is PM from a measurement perspective.
KK has good experience with top model SME (sees SME as the high end bargain-benchmark of technical/engineering for turntables) and also Continuum that was one of his favourites to review if I remember correctly.

Cheers

Can you buy this table with no arm?

It actually comes without an arm but in the US (Bob) and Japan (Stella Inc.) can sell you one with a Graham of your choice with a price incentive. They will drill you an arm board for practically any arm between 9 and 10 inches in the primary position and any arm up to 12 inches for the second position. One board comes free, additional boards for a very small amount (less than a hundred bucks each). Come to think of it, if you own multiple arms all it would take to switch between them would be 8 screws.

Oops. 4 screws in the primary position and 2 screws in the secondary position if you have multiple armboards.

Actually I meant the 4 screws of the main aluminum arm board plate that attaches to the plinth and 4 screws that attach the board to the plate. You can get as many boards as you like but the plate isn't for sale individually as is my understanding coming from Motofumi-san. :)

For the secondary it would thus be 2 to the plinth and 4 to the secondary's plate. ;)

Make mental note. DO NOT POST at 4am!

Errata. Gary is correct. The plate comes with the board. Price is Y150,000 for typical SME type mounts. Some arms may require an extra charge. I mixed up my info with another table we carry. EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!!!!

That said, one could fabricate his own arm board that can be attached to the plate with the aid of a trusty machine shop and the right measurements. I had this done locally way back when with my Phantom and HRX combo.

Unfortunately, since we will be playing music, ASCAP would land on us like a ton of bricks......

That is an interesting question. If one is having a party with music, how is that protected?

That's a big problem.... any music played outside immediate family and friends is a "public performance". So, if you have a party, you can't tell your friends that they can invite their friends. A couple of years ago, we used to get free live music at the farmer's markets around Seattle. All that is gone. I hope that the audio show organizers know this and pay their pound of flesh to BMI and ASCAP.
