TechDas Air Force One

Bring it on!

Jonathan, Are there any published direct comparisons between the NVS and other top tier turntables? I'm only aware of comparisons based on memory or on the tables being in different systems. It seems that there are quite a few TechDas tables in Asia. Perhaps some NVS owner there could comment if he has heard both tables.

yes October issue of Stereophile. Continuum vs NVS

that's not NVS vs TechDas

No it's not, but is does compare the NVS with continuum and Onedorf and the Continuum has been compared against the TechDas. Using deduction one might be able to get an idea on how the AF1 vs NVS compare. Obviously a head to head shoot out would be in order.

IMO you are getting at the comparison by inference that way and yes a head to head would be great.

There are enough of both TT's here in the USA so why doesn't someone make it happen

I agree, but if your not a professional reviewer, too bring a TechDas to an NVS owner's house or vice versa is not an easy task.

It was not compared directly with the Onedorf. The comparisons were through a flawed method and flawed interpretation of results of measuring via a tool that cannot successfully be used for comparison.

We have compared directly and multiple times with the Rockport and Continuum. All parties agreed on the results. This does not take away from how good both the Rockport and Continuum are.

I can't find the Stereophile NVS/Continuum review on-line. Does anyone have a link?

Jtinn, what was the flawed method and flawed interpretation and what type of measuring tool was used? Was the tool used for measuring speed?

When you write that the NVS was compared directly to the Rockport and to the Continuum, I'm assuming you mean the turntable/arm/cartridge systems, right? Or was the same arm and cartridge used on all three turntables in the same system for a direct turntable only comparison? Could you elaborate on the results?

A single direct comparison carried in a listening session will not show any thing - only what turntable has higher synergy with the system that is being used. Both should be high quality according to opinions we had here and we would need non biased people to carry the review, something I do not think possible in WBF members at this moment about these specific turntables!

According to Fremer he used the same arm and cart on both the NVS and continuum. He recorded the same track played on both tables in the same system 24/96 to make easier back to back comparo's.

At this level, aren't we talking about fairly neutral turntables? How much system synergy is there if the source is already considered to be fairly neutral? I agree about the biases, but how would such a direct comparison between such rare and expensive turntables ever take place if owners or dealers or reviewers were not involved in some way with the process? There would need to be a panel or listening group. Sounds like fun.

Peter, it does not really matter what the method of measurement was as this will spark a ridiculous debate :)

The same cartridge was used but both the Rockport and Continuum had their own tonearm. Our comparisons had the Durand Talea on the NVS.

Then it is certainly possible that what you actually preferred was the Talea/cartridge combination over the Continuum Cobra arm/cartridge and Rockport arm/cartridge combinations. The tables may all be fairly neutral. Or not. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you preferred the NVS table/Talea system to the other table/arm systems. And unless the exercise can be done with the same arm and cartridge, it is hard to know much about the turntables or make conclusions about such things as drive type, isolation etc.

To microstip's point, not much can be concluded unless these turntables are heard in a variety of settings over time by a variety of listeners.

I had my friend Bill Demars from Beauty of Sound over today delivering more stillpoints. He heard my system last week without my Table Stable active isolation table and remarked how much closer the lp delivered compared to top tape playback. Vibrations matter. If I were a betting man, the TechDas would reach a new level of performance sitting on one of these active devices. Keep the gel for horizontal isolation in the feet and remove it from the vertical for a rigid coupling to the table.

I'm betting that you will know soon enough.

Making the decision this weekend. Maybe, subconsciously I already have. I will still keep this table and will get another stand, isolation table and another phono stage for the AF1. I am thinking Ypsilon. go big or go home.....

The XP25 has two phono inputs. I'd do one thing at a time. What arm and cartridge are you thinking for the AF1?

I know, but the other input is for my mono cart/arm setup....Clearaudio universal with VTA lift. I'm thinking just the 10" Elite, Odin cable and a Koetsu Blue Lace for the AF1. The Ypsilon is consistent with my current all out assault approach on reproduction.

I ordered a Gold Finger Supreme along with the Elite. CA, VPI and Graham have the same dealer here. After hearing the GF at my brothers I was surprised at how fleshed out and natural it was compared to CA carts I've had in the past (Strad and Titanium V1). I ordered a bunch of wands along with it. My rotation will be Atlas, GFS, XV-1t. I still haven't tried my Proteus. My VTF scale ran out of batteries. I'll likely buy one today.

My Jade will stay on the Triplanar VII U2. Great combination. :)

While I won't be buying another table for a long, long time, This cartridge addiction is something else. Hyperion? Ikeda? To quote a friend here at WBF........When does it end?!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a Phonostage, I'm looking at the Lamm Signature or the EMT. Heck go big or go home right? VR-11 Mk2s are already in the pipeline. :D

When you die or the men in white coats come to take you away? :)
