Maybe if he just shot and killed himself with a single bullet the allegory might be more meaningful but you're not sure what other than self mutilation rose to the degree of impact of the civil war. He should have just killed himself and called it a day. Killing himself .... he would have been a hero. Cutting off his fingers, he's nothing short of an A-hole.Since a primary theme of the movie was the allegory related to the Irish Civil War as applied to individuals, I'm not sure what other than self-mutilation would have risen to the degree of impact that a Civil War has on humans. I thought the movie was very clever myself.
I keep saying that everything was terrific. It was the story that sucked. It will win a lot of awards but none I would give for Best Picture but heck, that's just me
