Our thoughts are always with those in need... best wishes for a speedy recovery and complete cure

Get well fast! We are all thinking of you.

Get well soon Roy, I'll throw some prayers up to The Big Guy for your speedy recovery.

Very sorry to hear that. I am sure being tucked in bed is not the best thing you know to do. All your friends here at WBF are waiting for you to get out of bed and say 'I am back in action'. Get well soon!

We wish you a safe and speedy recovery. You will bounce back. I look forward to your assessment of the components you have assembled. Take all the time you need to recover. We will be waiting for your return when you feel it's time.

Thank you all for your support. It means a lot to me. The surgery was successfull but unfortunatly the tumor had spread and the complete underside of the small intestine is now covered with tiny pinhead-sized tumors. Both sides of the abdomen also have some tumors. Since the entire small intestine can not be removed surgically, the doctors have decided to try chemo therapy first in order to try to clear half of the small intestine before another surgery can be performed to removed the remaining half of the small intestine.

Since when or if I will be able to return to my work is unsure, the customer I have had for almost ten years have now been forced to terminated my contract and seek a replacement. Because of this I have no income at the moment and see no possibility to find another customer or another job when I don't know how much I can work, when or if I get well.

So I need to sell some of my audio equipment to free capital to secure my future. If anyone is interested in buying some if this equipment please let me know. PPlease however consider that unless noted all this is 230V equipment.

Krell Master Reference Amplifiers

Hi guys,

I am hoping for some feedback from the those who have the big speakers like Altair 2 and Arrakis 2 from Rockport Technologies as well as the Magico Q7 available at local dealers for demo and know these speakers well. Dealers or distributors feedback is also highly valued.

As some of you might know I am waiting for delivery of the Magico Q7 which I have ordered. At the time of the order my plans for the future also included a pair of Rockport Arrakis 2 and a pair of Tidal Audio's upcoming top model La Assoluta. Since the Rockport and Tidal speakers are quite a bit bigger than the Magico Q7 and my living room was thought to not be big enough to fit either of the Rockport or Tidal speakers I chose to order the Magico speakers first. This was also done because I wanted to finish my living room system first and then start building the separate building where I planned to install the two systems based on the Rockport and Tidal speakers in their dedicated acousticly optimized listening room of a suitable size.

Since then I have been forced to change my plans due to illness and have now been forced to put the building plans on hold and focus on one living room system.

My question is should I still stick to the Magico Q7 as the speaker in this system or would the Rockport Arrakis be comfortable in a nearfield listening setup. How much space does the Arrakis need and how much of a trade off are the Altair compared to the Arrakis? I have never heard the second version of Altair or the semi-active Arrakis. I think the Tidal Audio speakers would be too big and weigh too much for my living room with its two tower pr side design. My living room has a basement underneath. The floor in the living room is made of concrete reinforced with iron. Still I think the Tidal speakers would be too much. There were no plans for a basement underneath the listening room in the new building.

Another issue with the Arrakis and the La Assoluta is that both speakers needs to be bi-amplified. The Q7 can be driven with one amplifiers. Amplifiers require space and in a living room environment saved space is a bonus.

In terms of amplification my initial plans were based on a desire to own and use what I consider the best amplifiers on the market and try to match them up with the chosen speakers as best as possible to get the maximum out of both the speakers and amplifiers based on the speakers and amplifiers chosen. As you will see I like amplifiers with a lot of power and control. Nothing bests the sensation of the ease an amplifier with a lot of power overhead will give you in my opinion.

I wanted to tri-amplify the Tidal Audio La Assoluta with Krell Master Reference Amplifiers to drive the sub bass towers, the new upcoming reference battery driven solid state Tidal Audio Rumos to drive the bass in the main towers and the Tube Research Labs Platinum Golden Triode Reference 800 Mono Amplifiers 20th Anniversary Edition to drive the midbass, midrange and tweeter in the main towers. I wanted to use a Tube Research Labs Platinum Golden Triode Reference Preamplifier Special Edition linestage in this system.

I wanted to combine the Rockport Arrakis 2 with a pair of Wilson Audio Thor's Hammer to extend bass frequency below 10Hz like the Tidal Audio speakers. I wanted to drive the Wilson Thor's Hammer with a pair of Sovereign Audio The Sovereign amplifiers and I wanted to drive the Rockport Arrakis bass with a pair of Goldmund Telos 5000 while I wanted to drive the Rockport Arrakis midbass, midrange and tweeter with FM Acoustics Resolution Series 118. I wanted to use a FM Acoustics Resolution Series 268-C linestage in this system.

I wanted to combine the Magico Q7 with a pair of Burmester S8 subwoofers to extend frequency below 20Hz like the two other systems. The Burmester subwoofers have one of their own amplifiers built in so there is no need for an external amplifier to drive it. I did however want to bi-amplify the Magico Q7 with a pair of Dynaudio Arbiter to drive the bass and a pair of darTZeel NHB-458 to drive the midbass, midrange and tweeter. I wanted to use the linestage in a Lyra Connoisseur 3.0 in this system.

Now that the plans are changed and I need to change focus from the desire to own all of these amplifiers to save space and find the optimal choice to get the chosen speakers to sound its best I also need advice on what sounds best with the Magico Q7, Rockport Arrakis or Tidal Audio La Assoluta. I realise that the La Assoluta has not been auditioned by anyone yet but have a sonic character similar to the other speakers in the Tidal Audio family.

So what I am really asking is what choices do you think I need to make in terms of component choice when I need to scale down my plans to one systen which will play in my living room?

Hi I own the Altair 2 (for about 60 days now) and have heard the Arrakis locally at a friends (he has the active version, external cross over with 4 VTL amps and 2 REL subs) We also have similar sized rooms (mine is 30 ft long by about 20 wide) I don't listen to a lot of recordings with super low bass (like pipe organs) I listen to mostly jazz and some chamber music and the typical current Norah Jones or Sarah Mclaughlin. I am very happy with my Altrairs with no sub and seem to be getting excellent deep bass. My room is also well treated via a custom Rives Audio plan...

I do feel that a simpler system has some advantages over a external cross over with more amps and connections...but this set up to has advantages...I suspect in dynamics and ease of presentation - once set up properly and tuned.

I have not heard the Magico Q7s or the Tidals. I have heard the Wilson Alexandria X2's and the large Focal's. One advantage that you have consider on the Wilson's and Focal's is their adjustability. Which can be a significant advantage in nearfield or far set ups.

How big is the room you plan to install these speakers? I think the issue is how far do you want to scale down ... Magic, Rockport, Tidal, Wilson, Focal all a top notch. I've never been a fan of systems with different amps types on the bass, mids, and top end. I am sure you can get all this to sound wonderful...but more time adjusting/tuning...and more variables to creep in like the speed or signature of diff amps. It's why I am a fan of Porsche 911's. You can get more power, better brakes or better this or that...the the package is very complete and does everything nearly the best. The sum of the parts is more that the whole...this car has balance of all the attributes you care about.

I've heard a set up frequently over the years...used to be Dali Megalines, custom external tube cross over, 4 VTL tube amps, 2 JL Audio subs, complete set of Purist Audio 25th anniversary cables everywhere. It was just a killer good system. Then he recently "downsized" to the top of the line Focal's - Grand Utopia EM's. No subs, just 2 VTL amps, no external cross over. Now the speakers changed...but I'd take this "simpler" system...to me it just sounds better (if you haven't heard the newer Focal's...this is speaker to add to your list)

HereDSC_1948.jpg is a pic of my room with the Rockport Altair's installed....
