The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

Got my batch the other day, and after reading this review here...
I went straight for the Kubelik Dvorak...
And WTH?! It sounds *great*! I hardly hear any of the deficiencies that are pointed out in the review... Yes, it's a very lively recording, and the metal have *bite*, but to say they're "nasal"? Nah, don't think so... He admits he was listening through a speaker he was not very familiar with (for a review), so maybe that had a more than passing effect on this evaluation of the album...
Folks on this forum will likely order the whole batch :) But if you haven't, make sure you don't skip this one, as it's a goodie!

cheers,
alex

Will be here once customs charges hit me.

1) Michael Johnson does not like the sound of anything recorded at Jesus Christus Kirche.
2) There's always something equipment related when he reviews DG TOS.

He is listening through Raidhos. You can ignore what he says right away.

The TOS Dvorak new world in living voice R80 system today was excellent, with SJS 300b 8 watt amps. Very lyrical, lots of drama and contrasts and great dynamic range. Highs are a bit hard sounding like some other TOS and could have been better. The speakers corner Kertesz in the review has very EQed artificial bass. I have the Kertesz Decca ED2 and the London CS first edition.

I will listen to this TOS in a couple more systems to check for consistency

XT2 it appears. The review was IMO unfair to the readers as well as unprofessional.

I’ve tried to find measurements of those XT2s without luck.
As for Johnson’s reviews he seems to have hangups. His review of the Brahms Gilels was so weird that I decided to buy it anyway after first giving it a pass. Great music making and an excellent tracking test.

received almost all the new batch (minus the Grieg)
and went for the Pollini first, as it was the most exciting for me to listen how it went out from the new remaster...
was listening to that recording for so many years at so many pressing and its always had some problems and not getting delivered like we expected.
this issue is just excellent (as most of the new DG reissues from that line)!
super quiet pressing, not a single pop or hiss, the piano is LIVE and well produced. image and transient are impeccable!
you are drown to the music and performance in a seconds! what an LP! great great great!
so glad they did it. next the Dvorak..

I hope they do more from Pollini's discography (Chopin Etudes, Polonaises, Beethoven's last 3 piano sonatas...).

unfortunately this time his review is not so far off, i will not delete my order because of it, i think all of the new DG issues are VERY good and welcome to my collection, its probably one of the best reissues ever come out in classical music...
but, the Dvorak 9 with kublik is on the thin sounding with lacking of real bass section noted. The strings parts are very lush and with some small speakers or some electronics could sound like "nazel" but I will not go too far with that description.

This piece has a bundle of slam and dynamics parts and this reissue sounds lean in comparison... to my taste the wetness is not a negative. i kinda like it , the real hall sound and the spread of the notes across the high ceiling is very ingaging.
i will prefer more substance in the lower register, but overall the conducting and playing is almost unparalleled to the rest... (i have a LOT of recordings of that 9th)
also listen to the KERTESZ Esoteric issue right after and it's also very very good, but dry, very close miced and a lot less involved I think. kertesz try to make some drama with a lot of PP parts but lost my attention in the process as Kublik will keep you in the tip of your chair.
overall not their best reissue but indeed one to have after all. its dead quiet and play beautiful. as Alex said - its a goodie!

After languishing at Frankfurt airport for 12 days, my package finally made it to the USA and cleared customs. Hopefully, it will arrive this week.
12 days in purgatory.....same for mine, except no notice it made it to the USA, just an obscure 'arrived at airport'. :( i suspect mine is with yours, but somehow neither DHL or USPS has given notice. might be connected to the US Postal Holiday yesterday.

this morning later i will get my daily USPS notice, which may shed some light.

Don't have the Grieg yet, but I'm playing the Pollini right now, and it's great, like just about every other TOS LP...

Now, on to another issue...My Bruckner box came with one side of one LP with some nasty scratches... Reached out to DG, and they asked me to contact my vendor, which I did... Now, the vendor wants me to *destroy* every single LP in the box, as they'll only replace the whole thing... This seems a little bit on the wrong side, no?

I thought so too... When I saw "Raidho" there, I immediately went "oh no"...

Like I said, it's a very "lively" recording, and I guess if you play it through tipped up gear, it'll be even more so... Over here, with a nice Hana Umami Red cartridge through darTZeel and Nagra phonos, it does not sound overtly aggressive, but it doesn't sound overtly rich either...

Heard them again on large Admire audio horns. The recording definitely has an aggressive top on some frequencies of the Tuttis as I heard over the weekend, and the Kertesz Decca originals are more balanced but this TOS is excellent and lyrical once you get to the softer passages so more engaging imo unless you just want to show off your system only for the start couple of minutes like audiophiles do, where it’s possible those who consider things very bright will stop listening

Kubelik recorded the New World Symphony with the VPO on Decca in 1959 (titled Symphony no. 5 in those days). Has anyone heard that version ?

Mine is still in purgatory, a week now.
And of course, no human being to talk to about it's ongoing status.

for 10 days the DHL tracking number was showing as 'pending' on my daily USPS email notice. which means it's incoming. now that notice is gone. poof. and it appears it's still in Europe observing the DHL tracking. originally in DHL possession on Oct 2nd..."The international shipment has been handed over to DHL".

so now it's over 2 weeks and really nothing has happened. gone from Rudersdorf, Germany to Geneva is all.

one possibility is that is did get shipped to the USA, has been reassigned a USPS number, and will just arrive without notice. needing a signature but my gate will be closed or my wife won't answer the door. so i will need to drive to the Post Office.

eventually...........first world problems.

sigh.

Mine arrived last night. It was clear that the box had been opened and then taped shut again (different tape from original packaging). The LPs were still in their original sealed shipping envelopes.

The tracking changed after 12 days to show arrival in USA and handoff to USPS.

Will get time next week to listen. Very much looking forward to the Pollini.
